I use a single blade and idk but I cut myself way less than when I was using multi blades. Reusable handle but you can switch out blades when they get dull and a pack of 100 is a few bucks. Honestly typing it out it's probably because I'm careful and giving a shit

It’s not just being careful, they cut differently. Lots of those multi blade razors require you to essentially press the entire face of it to the skin to work, which for some folks or places can be the wrong approach. I spent years getting ingrown hairs, clogged pores, etc on my jawline from the razor having to go around that edge. It was especially guaranteed if I went against the grain. I think the first blade did its job and the subsequent blades would scrape up my skin or smear shit (dead skin, soap, bacteria) into the pores or cuts.
Once I switched to a single blade I was able to use a lot less pressure and I could safely cut at angles that were impossible before. Huge improvement to my skin health.

I only stopped breaking out so much when I switched to a single blade safety razor, wish I'd known about that earlier.
They make safety razors specially designed if you got skin that easily breaks out, they have (for lack of a better term) a corrugated head that helps it move over tender skin. They also are used by people who have keloids or skin tags.
I can never find a pack of blades. Every drug store I've been to only has the Gillette manly-men 8-razor multi-blades for $30 behind the glass smh

I think I bought the wrong kind of razor blade
I got a locally made old fashion razor and brush and its honestly very fulfilling. You can't really rush with it and I love the process. Others might not. To those, yeah don't skimp out on your razor.
I've never considered anything other than the disposables, hmm...
I enjoy it. You kind of have to know the tricks though. It helps to exfoliate the skin first and then use warm water. Cold will tighten the pors and make the shave not as close.
I got teenage facial hair though cause of my weird hormone issue and being on T so I image your results will vary. But I did learn that stuff from my wife who did this method until she was able to get hair removal.
Idk, I find the 3 blades do way less damage to my skin. I tried a safety razor, but it just never got close enough of a shave for me. I would cover an area again and again in every direction but it was always prickly afterwards. But the 5 blades leave me bloody and I break out later, and they dont even get the hairs right.
That being said most people who use disposables ive talked to think the 5 blades are the far superior option, so maybe I'm just weird.
Yeah, I realise now that it probably varies greatly by person, which I would have considered if this weren't a stupid bit post. Probably depends on the coarseness of hair.
Like many here I’ve been using a safety razor for a few years now. It’s pretty unfuckwitable just in terms of waste generation alone. However I forgot mine at home when I went out of town a few months ago and just got a cheap 3-blade and holly shit my face was smooth as hell.
I haven't used a normal razor in forever but I always found I got more snags and ingrown hairs when I used a razor with more than 3 blades. Entirely possible it was user error
I think part of this is that Maria's advice is intenionally messy to reflect her character. That being said, when Nevada was being written, the razors she's talking about had only existed for a few years and I'm pretty sure you were limited to the more expensive brands like Gillette.
What no fuckin' way, have there really been such leaps and bounds in disposable razor technology in the last decade???
The "intentionally messy to reflect her character" thing is something I ruminate on constantly about this fuckass book. Thing is, how far does that go? Her stupid questions about gender and punk-rock haircuts sure weren't intentionally messy, nor were her brief screeds against trans men, which I think is born out by the author apologising for them in the 10th anniversary afterword. It's one of those things that rlly makes me 
because Idk. I suppose I could buy it for this, because she also notes later how good she totally is at being trans, which is a fairly deliberate reflection on how bad she is at life.

Well not the last decade, but in the decade before Nevada was originally published. If I have my years right:
2006 - Gillette Fusion 5 first sold in USA
2008 - first draft of Nevada written
2013 - Nevada published
So even if that line was a last minute addition to the manuscript, those razors had been available for less than 10 years and I don't think you could get them at dollar stores (although I could be wrong; I was not buying cartridge or disposable razors at the time)
I think I buy this part of Maria as intentionally messy, but you're right - it's hard to be sure.
