From Tropical Storm to Cat 5 in under 24 hours... Holy shit. I mean, should we just go ahead and evacuate for tropical storms now? There is no time to prep for the worst when storms intensify to such extremes so quickly.

In just 12 hours, Otis’ strength more than doubled from 70 mph (113 kph) winds to 160 mph (257 kph)

Source

Cat 1 starts at 74mph and cat 5 at 157mph. I've never heard of this fast of an intensification in my 36 years

Hyper-intensification seems to be the new normal.

Well, until 2030 when we upgrade to ultra-hyper-intensification.

Wonder how often this has happened? Time to spiral down a rabbit hole.

TL;DR : Hurricane Patricia from 2015 will be compared with Otis, but it'll take researchers years to figure out the how and why their prediction models failed to see this.
