I'm not proposing anything here, I'm curious what you all think of the future.

What is your vision for what you want Linux to be?

I often read about wanting a smooth desktop experience like on MacOS, or having all the hardware and applications supported like Windows, or the convenience of Google products (mail, cloud storage, docs), etc.

A few years ago people were talking about convergence of phone/desktop, i.e. you plug your phone into a big screen and keyboard and it's now your desktop computer. That's one vision. ChromeOS has its "everything is in the cloud" vision. Stallman has his vision where no matter what it is, the most important part is that it's free software.

If you could decide the future of personal computing, what would it be?

dunno. just started using it a few months ago and it seems pretty usable. stuff just, works. I really expected there to be a bit more "brokenness" about it, where everything had to be configured (and as I've since discovered, that's what Arch is for). I've been really impressed with it thus far. things like wayland are just impressive, from a technical standpoint.

another thing I really like about linux is the options. I've tried a few distros now - havent found one I like more than mint, though mx is pretty close.

MacOS is not smooth, please dint make linux another macOS....

It's smoother than Windows, but that isn't a very high bar.

my view for linux is basically macos but FOSS, my dream system would be a fully immutable install with secure boot and fully verified root on boot it would most likely use gnome and wayland and the only way to install programs will flatpak, there wont be a package manager it will instead be an image-based OS with everything needed preinstalled(amd, intel, nvidia drivers etc) if anyone is interested in developing something like this hit me up

Simple to use, without need to customise, or tinker, but with options to customise how you see fit. It’s where Linux has been moving for years and windows is getting worse in terms of clunky, customizing, nagging. However, windows works easier for non tech users, for now.

I think a native cloud server platform built in like many NAS now offer to allow cloud service from phones and other devices without giving up your data. That’s already available through apps and services, but it’s not automatic.

I agree, that our phones are becoming our computer, now on the go. I don’t see them replacing a laptop yet, but once screen sharing or casting allows any screen to become your computer, we’re there. Why are we still focused on plugging into a screen to change to pc functionality? Microsoft tries to merge touchscreen and mouse use in windows, but it didn’t really work. I think Apple are more on the money with interoperable but seperate desktops/screens, but each device should offer both depending on use.

I never thought of it as a directed or steered consistent and homogeneous movement of Linux/FOSS etc.

Personally I think the future is, hardware wise, for personal computing use on the phone=pc direction.

Most of my personal stuff i do is on having everything synced (thx syncthing) using sustainable file standards.

And looking at my phone its close to my budget pc hardware wise, so not that far from becoming reality.

But I think FOSS does have a hard time pushing for this on the software side. Its not that simple to provide interoperability etc. For additional devices and specific hardware configs.

Based on my working environment I think the cloud will be the future. However in this realm proprietary software will be the inevitable winner here.

I never got the hinge on mac os. So I have no opinion on that one.

An immutable distro with working gpu passthrough for vms (or whatvere that's called). That's the dream

@pmk Future linux should take example from Tromjaro.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.
