Throw away all the oil money race tracks and have multiple races here

[โ€“] SuperIce@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

Probably my favorite race of the year, even though it was only a sprint. That brings my hopes up for tomorrow's race a lot.

[โ€“] alphacyberranger@lemmy.world 23 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Max and Lando went into the sunset

[โ€“] Dmian@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Best pace of the race from both

[โ€“] DV8@lemmy.world 23 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Alpha Tauri looking good for the real race tomorrow.

[โ€“] Dmian@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago

Absolutely. And RIC is driving really well. Heโ€™s back! :D

[โ€“] hagelslager@feddit.nl 18 points 2 years ago

What an absolute stonker of a race! Possibly the best sprint this year. Hopefully the main race is also this entertaining!

Hats off to the direction and F1tv commentary!

[โ€“] Dmian@lemmy.world 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Amazing how good are the Alpha Tauris at nursing the tires

[โ€“] SuperIce@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah, Yuki was a few tenths of a second faster than LeClerc in the last few laps after following LeClerc for the entire race. A few more laps and Yuki would've had a good chance to overtake LeClerc, which is insane to think about.

[โ€“] bedrooms@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

It was amusing to see Yuki be cautious this time, after the Mexico course-out. Just tried a little against Lewis and then backed down, anticipating he'll overtake him later easily. In Mexico he made that exact mistake. A beautiful rhyme.

This sprint race might be the best of any race this season so far. So much going on.

[โ€“] calamitycastle@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Is this what happens when you take 'managing' down in importance?

He somehow managed to keep the same pace as LeClerc and pull away from Sainz. And the AT's tire degradation is clearly better than Ferrari's. He was a few tenths faster than LeClerc in the last couple of laps. Another 3 laps and he would've been ahead.

[โ€“] JCPhoenix@kbin.social 8 points 2 years ago

OK, that was a sick pass of Perez by Hamilton. Goddamn.

Perez better pick it up.

[โ€“] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Pretty exciting so far. Lots of close racing and overtaking.

[โ€“] hagelslager@feddit.nl 2 points 2 years ago

Absolutely! Even before DRS there was a ton of action.

[โ€“] Dmian@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

Ferraris: โ€œTasty tires! Nom, nom, nom!โ€

[โ€“] Dmian@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Those with some tire left must now push

Now this is pretty exciting

What a race

[โ€“] utubas@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago (4 children)

Am I crazy or is it way too advantageous to start second? Verstappen had the best line...

[โ€“] espentan@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

This isn't a bad place to start second, but Max had a bit better start and Lando was perhaps a bit too cautious with breaks going into the first corner.

[โ€“] DV8@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Some tracks are like that, but I suppose we'll see what happens in the real race tomorrow. Though this practice/sprint race tends to ruin any surprises.

[โ€“] evanuggetpi@lemmy.nz 3 points 2 years ago

Norris could have moved over to cover verstappen off. For some reason he was too late.

[โ€“] JJROKCZ@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Some tracks are like that, first isnโ€™t always best unless you have the acceleration speed to keep ahead

[โ€“] DV8@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I'm liking that Checo is proving on track that he can be the best number 2. Vamos Checo!

He was closest to his team mate?

I agree he put in a strong race, but I suspect his goose is cooked at this point. It's surely too late when you've got Ric, Law and Tsu all waiting eagerly in the wings.

[โ€“] DV8@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If he can consistently finish 2-4 and qualify better, he can help play pit games. That's all that's needed to keep his spot. I don't think Tsunoda or Lawson are safe choices so he'd need to do many mistakes like in Mexico before that could become real imho.

[โ€“] qdJzXuisAndVQb2@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You may well be right. I guess Tsuonda and Lawson would probably fare no better fundamentally and lack Perez's experience, but an on-form Ricciardo is a juicy prospect, surely?

[โ€“] DV8@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Yeah, but if Perez can prove himself a known, consistent variable, I don't think it would make sense to switch it up. Neither would be a future WC so they need reliability from day 1 in 2024.

[โ€“] hagelslager@feddit.nl 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I always love those shots from the front where a car appears from another one to make a pass. Like what we just saw with Perez on Russell. Very cinematic.

[โ€“] Dmian@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

The Alpha Tauris have good pace. TSU is right behind LEC.

[โ€“] Dmian@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

HAM SAI RIC close!

[โ€“] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

What a fantastic sprint. Just pure, clean racing. Hope to have more of them in the future.

[โ€“] Motecuhzoma@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Hamiltonโ€™s pace is gone

[โ€“] Dmian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

That was quite a race!

[โ€“] Dmian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

SAI is lucky that RIC is right behind PIA, and distracts him, because the Ferraris are degrading like mad.

[โ€“] Dmian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

That GAS ALO battle!

Eat that ocon

Giga chad Padre

[โ€“] Dmian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

The Maccas now starting to degrade too. PIA is slow.

[โ€“] Dmian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

LEC with nice pace, catching HAM.

[โ€“] espentan@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Perez dropping back from Lando? Used up his tires working his way forwards, maybe..

I love this track

[โ€“] espentan@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Danny only .3 behind Sainz..

[โ€“] JCPhoenix@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago

He passed up Sainz! He passed up a Ferrari!

Then he lost the spot back to Sainz due to DRS, but still, that it happened at all!

[โ€“] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Oof Lando dropped 2 places. Doesn't look like he tried to push hard on that first corner.

Perez down 2 places as well.
