MODERATORS

Welcome

Hello everyone and welcome to the Canadian Grand Prix Weekend thread.

Details about this race can be found here.

Sessions

This thread will cover all the sessions this weekend, so that's all 3 practice sessions, qualifying, and the race.

We will monitor how this goes to see if we need more granularity.

Spoilers

The rules around spoilers are not yet in place, therefore we won't be enforcing anything around spoilers this weekend. This goes beyond the scope of this thread too.

If you do not want spoilers, please do not look in this community this weekend.

The aim is to have a finished set of rules ready by mid next week.

These conditions really bring out the chasm in ability between Stroll and Alonso.

Wow we need rain every weekend. This qualifying is nuts

[–] UESPA_Sputnik@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

Let's revive Bernie's sprinkler idea.

[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 years ago

Go on Albon!

[–] sunaurus@lemm.ee 9 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Wow, Williams with the big balls strategy, nicely done

[–] Kidney_Thief1988@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I respect it. They saw a small window to put in some fast laps on softs and they capitalized on it in a big way.

Williams with 2 fastest sectors, just like we ll predicted.

[–] jalda@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 years ago

Williams dominance could bore fans

[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What a clusterfuck that was at the end.

This new wall in the wet is pushing drivers out on to the racing line when they rejoin.

If its wet during the race, this has some dreadful implications.

Wow, can't believe just a few races ago we were talking about whether this would be Perez year. And he is not even close to Verstappen.

Stroll just isn't cutting it on Aston Martin anymore. Maybe his dad can give him a cushy office job so we can get a competent driver.

Wow, Perez missings another Q3. Changing conditions give you some excuses, but overall that is not a good look against a team mate that is dominating the championship.

Q1 resultsTop 3: VER ALO HAM

Eiminated: TSU GAS DEV SAR ZHO

[–] lemmein@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Sainz is getting a penalty for that surely

[–] Omgarm@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Nice amount of impeding today.

Could turn into a tough weekend for Ferrari with both cars (probably) starting outside the top 10.

[–] jalda@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Q2 resultsFastest: ALB VER NOR
Eliminated: LEC PER STR MAG BOT

exactly as expected

[–] Omgarm@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Leclerc and pain radios, name a better duo.

Red flag, Piastri on the wall as Hülkenberg gets P2

[–] sunaurus@lemm.ee 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

So it's effectively over now with Hulk on the front row?

[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Session probably restarts, but if rain continues track will be slower.

Hulk P2? Please let it happen!

[–] Cynosure@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

::: spoiler LEC PER and STR out in Q2? This is interesting :::

[–] Tronso@feddit.de 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

With the ongoing rain, that has to be the final classification. Great work by Hulkenberg and Alonso. Verstappen delivering as expected.

Unless the rain stops before the track is green flagged again. But it currently looks like it would take more than 7 minutes to form a dry line again, even if the rain stopped right now.

wooow HULK!

[–] Tronso@feddit.de 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

If the rain picks up now and the softs take 2 laps to get to working temperature, those who just came in might lose out heavily.

Seems like lemmy.ml is having some trouble pushing out comments to other instances from this post 😬 Many comments here are missing on other instances

Might make sense to host these threads on a less overloaded instance?

Thanks to the mods for making this thread!

Hoping for a good race, though it's bit late in the evening for us Europeans

Aw, man, went to commercial right as Gasly was about to tell everybody how he felt about Sainz being in the middle of the track.

[–] MrStrawberry@feddit.de 3 points 2 years ago

So one-lap-shootout coming up.

[–] YnNoS@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

What is this race direction? We're missing albon and Norris soft lap. Who is in charge this weekend? Seems worse than other weekends.

[–] jalda@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 years ago

Starting to rain, and most drivers on softs

[–] Rumblestiltskin@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 years ago

Does it rain everyontreal GP weekend?

[–] MrStrawberry@feddit.de 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Sainz should get even more then a 3 grid penalty. This was not only impeading, but crazy dangerous.

[–] itsmikeyd@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The penalty is given for the infringement, not the outcome. Not that I disagree with you, but that is how the rules are applied.
