I'm a professional concept artist. The worst thing you could say in our field is actually "let's draw something together":)

Design by committee results in abominations 99.99% of the times.

I'd say let just people draw stuff if they want and then we pick the best.

I've seen Kbeans and I think it's both funny and useful. Cartoony beans would make a great snoo replacement, both in logo and if Ernest plans on adding an equivalent to reddit's user snoos.

I'm thinking that the design should be open to customization with a basic creator, where one can choose different heads/bodies etc.

[-] Otome-chan@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

Kbinauts and kbeans are the names I've seen used. I prefer kbinaut and I think it's growing in use haha.

I thought the cool folder was our icon? Like the whole Linux file system thing

[-] wjrii@kbin.social 7 points 2 years ago

Did Ernest ever explain the origin and pronunciation of the name? While there would be a certain tragicomic open-source poetry in ignoring what he had assumed would happen, it would be relevant information.

Thank you, sir. So the mascot should be an exasperated developer answering the same question one hundred times, then?

[-] ernest@kbin.social 10 points 2 years ago

I'm not exasperated at all ;)

Jesus christ that OP is so uncharitable. They came looking for a pissfight and you didn't give it to them. Bravo.

[-] mihnt@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago

And they still were butthurt about his pfp from Monty Python of all things to angry about.

[-] Otome-chan@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago

this is actually pretty interesting. I think it's neat for either interpretation. but it's good to have things clarified :)

One of the things that I think made our exodus site so endearing is that we had a cute logo from the start. In that vein, and with many folks thinking about us collectively calling ourselves kbinauts, I thought to make a little logo with a spaceship. What do ya'll think? Can someone with more skills doctor this up?

Also, for those with their own ideas, feel free to post your own in the comments. Maybe we can settle on one and make it ours. I'd like to start seeing these logos all out in the real world one day.

What about a tardigrade (water bear)? They're little, scrappy and can survive in space.

[-] v13@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

This is cool!!!!!!

[-] Otome-chan@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago

I'm no artist but my vote goes towards the mascot being some sort of alien (or maybe astronaut?) with a gun. the gun to match the karabin source of the name, the alien to match the "kbinauts" moniker.

I've been wondering where "kbin" came from. So it's confirmed that the original Polish version is supposed to be named "rifle"?

[-] Otome-chan@kbin.social 9 points 2 years ago

So I just stumbled upon one of ernest's comments about it. Yes, the polish instance is a play on words referencing a rifle. however it seems the original "kbin" name actually stems from unix's "sbin".

I guess in the end it ends up being a double reference?

[-] Grimlo9ic@kbin.social 7 points 2 years ago

however it seems the original "kbin" name actually stems from unix's "sbin".

Oh so THAT'S why it's stylized as "/kbin" on kbin.pub. And why the logo kinda looks like a folder. Interesting!

[-] Otome-chan@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago

yup that seems to be it. mystery solved

[-] Boabab@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

That makes a lot of sense! I really like that reference and how the logo is stylized as a forward slash

[-] Lolman228@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago

This can only go well

[-] steb@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago

I think of kbin as 'Kabin' so something like 'Kabby the log cabin' would be what I'd design if I had any artistic skill

I'm still mourning Boost (my reddit 3rd party app of choice for like 6 years), a rocket for kbin would be a cruelty.

[-] v13@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

Oh! I had no idea! Sorry about that.

[-] OurTragicUniverse@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

I get so dramatic when I need a nap. A rocket would be fine, don't mind me.

[-] v13@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

No worries, I'm not married to the idea. 😊

[-] BentiGorlich@thebrainbin.org 3 points 2 years ago

I mean just look at mastodon and how omnipresent the mascot is. It would be relly great if Kbin had one, too. Sadly I am neigher an artist nor super creative when it comes to this stuff

[-] r4venw@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

Maybe an animal?
Kbin Koala? Kangaroo? Kiwi? Kinkajou? All good options!

According to ChatGPT, a Kaban is Polish for wild boar. A Kobuz is a large gyrefalcon. Relevant because kBin admin @ernest is Polish.

[-] wjrii@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

Looks like ChatGPT is sort of right.

Still, between Porky Pig, Pumbaa, and various American sports mascots, some sort of adorable porcine doodle should be very possible.

[-] Haunting_Tale_5150@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

My first thought is a raccoon after the bin in kbin. Cause that's where they like to hang out. Maybe a bit undignified, but cute.
