Allies ask me stuff like this all the time. How can people be transphobic? It makes no sense to them. And rationally, it really doesn't, there is no good reason to be transphobic, just as there is no good reason to be racist. But there's plenty of bad reasons for it. Most of them are rooted in patriarchy, because our existence refutes central ideas that such a system is built upon. We are an ideological threat to somebody who believes in a natural order of oppositional sexism. Anybody who upholds "traditional" notions of gender, sexuality and relationships can at best tolerate us as an exception that proves the rule, and that usually means a strictly binarist transmedicalism. Trans rights can only be fully realized when there's freedom of gender expression, bodily and reproductive autonomy and equality of all genders, and while this benefits everybody both cis and trans as long as they want a just and equitable society, all of that is dangerous and destructive when you want patriarchy.

And there's also the element of what i call parental transphobia. A lot of parents see their kids not as autonomous, self-determined beings, but project things onto them, and our transition disrupts these projections. Elmo sees his kids as mini elmos that exist not as individuals with agency of their own, but only as his expies. And when one of them says "fuck you i'm not your copy, i'm a girl for starters", that's something he will never be able to accept.

There's other forms of transphobia that are more personal or rooted in ideological inconsistencies, like the hyper-specific brainworms of actual TERFs or transphobic Marxists, for example. And i think there's people who just hate me because i show that you can make radical changes in your life and that we can refuse to stay the same. That's threatening to some people. But none of that applies here.

The main difference between the two is that US politics only has face-heel turns, never the other way around.

You are a major political party. You govern half of the states and at-risk populations are already moving across the country because they scramble towards a sanctuary. You are well-connected to unions, civil rights groups and other orgs about to get fucked over by the federal government. You regularly recruit tens of thousands of campaigning volunteers. You run the second-largest political fundraising network in the world. A metric fuckton of government employees from all possible backgrounds are about to get fired. The half of the country that isn't gloating over mass deportations may be at the most mobilizable moment in their entire life. And there's millions of people that need protection because they are about to get hit by the seething rage of a fascist government.

So yeah, what could you possibly do?

I usually see the term allonormativity used to describe this, but that fits as well.

The general public isn't aware of this, but opossums are among the few mammals that are immune to capsaicin. They're also immune to the venom of pit vipers and scorpions, which they view as tasty snacks, and mostly immune to the rabies virus which is incredibly lethal in most other mammals, but that's besides the point here, they can just grab a carolina reaper with their little paws and munch away as if it was a bell pepper.
