why don't they program them to look up math programs and outsource chess to other programs when they're asked for that stuff?

Because the AI doesn't know what it's being asked, it's just a algorithm guessing what the next word in a reply is. It has no understanding of what the words mean.

"Why doesn't the man in the Chinese room just use a calculator for math questions?"

A gear is not a wheel. That's why it's called a "gear" and a "wheel".

I'm reminded of an early model that was trained to find if tanks were hiding pictures of forests / jungles. Was doing great with the training data then was given new images and seemed to be guessing wildly.

Turns out it in the training data all the pictures with tanks were taken on cloudy days.

They're actors. In Mario Brothers 3 you can see the background bolted to the set and you go back stage at the end of every level. It's a production. Then they do celebrity sporting events.

A lot of transportation has an equivalent amount of doors, and there a lot of house, apartment buildings, offices... You use a lot more doors every day than you do wheels.

There’s a term for this idea, “preternatural”. It means a phenomenon that is the result of the natural world, not magic or divine, but still unexplainable with our current understanding.

So anything actually proven to exist would be "preternatural" then. Even it turned out to be the result of magic or the devine, it's still something that exists in the natural world that we just don't understand yet.

I they got sued by shareholders for doing so. I guess CEOs aren't the only ones that need to be on the list...

Lemmy isn't a court of law, neither is the Internet.

Proceeds to cite general Internet opinion as proof of guilt.

but as an atheist, it sucks to be lumped in like this.

Every person with a religious belief knows this feeling.

Received a text from a pollster asking me who I'm going to vote for, is there any good reason to respond?

This is a weird one.

I am subscribed to Risa@startrek.website When browsing on my phone I can see the thumbnails just fine. When browsing on my desktop ublock origin blocks the thumbnails and avatars, but only from the startrek.website instance, and only when I'm accessing it through Lemmy.ca

If I go directly to startrek.website I can view everything fine, and other instances I am not encountering this issue with. Any idea what might be the cause? I am using Firefox.

I can go to the main page of a Lemmy instance and see whatever is active on that instance at the time, but is there a way to get something like r/all for all federated instances?
