I think federation is the future of user-created content sharing, it just was always a bit ‘early’ for me when replacing existing social media and not having my existing networks there. I think the Reddit/Lemmy mindset being around connection over interests instead of with specific people reduces that friction and the technology is mature enough for prime time (scaling issues aside).

It’s an exciting time for the internet!

The specific point for me was the attacks on @christianselig@mastodon.social from that dumpster fire of a website.

I had been looking at Mastodon since @deviantollam@defcon.social spoke so highly of it and the platform it provides for marginalised groups but personally dislike the microblogging format, and when looking for Reddit alternatives it seemed like Lemmy would be a catch all for me. Looking forward to the integration getting tighter to expand discussions across the fediverse.

Pauper is a very cheap way to play Magic, 60 card decks with commons only. Some of the top competitive decks only run about $30, and you can build fun decks up with 10 cent cards from your LGS.

For casual play, my favourite is still Commander though. You can definitely build commander decks on a budget (one of the ones I made run me $26) and the format is a lot of fun!

Do you think better threading in Mastodon might help? If comments showed up as threaded replies and only top level posts got their own thread, would you engage cross-platform more? The style of post is different, but I feel if they felt more in the style of the platform you are viewing from then it could lead to some interesting discussions!

Being able to centralise your own identity server (with your choice of authentication method ideally) and federate the services/content would be a great option for those who want one identity across the fediverse.

New to the tech, but if that identity server could also act as your ActivityPub ‘master’ server for all services so you have a login that when entered to any instance would show all your messages and subscriptions could make for a great experience.

I’m running a 40% split at work, and I’ve noticed a massive difference in back pain at the end of a long day. Having the shoulders open and rolled back improves my posture and has made a world of difference to me.

A small quality of life thing, but some way to mark notifications as ‘read’ automatically, either when i click through to view it in the thread or when i vote on it. Maybe I’ve missed a setting somewhere, but when someone replies and I go to read/interact, the notification number stays there until I manually go and click ‘read’

A bit more broad than r/shittyaskscience, but to tide you over there is ShittyAskLemmy

I remember Reddit being quite confusing when I started and different to most social media. It took me a while to get my head around following communities and not individuals. Federation is something quite different, but the feel is very old school reddit and I’m finding it pretty easy to learn, just with less creature comforts at the moment that I’m sure will come with time.

I tend to drop the numbers when the base name is available, but I know a lot of friends go for consistency across platforms and the number helps ensure it’ll be available on any new platform they come to
