Ah interesting!

They have talked a bit about what they are trying to do. It's backed by Silicon Valley billionaire Eron Wolf, and he has talked about his frustration with everyone putting their blood, sweat, and tears into the software and then someone like Facebook comes along and makes billions from the work of others.

I get it's frustrating, but personally I think it fails to see that Facebook is part of the ecosystem, but also so are many small companies, and many of these are contributing back to the software. If you remove the companies then you have removed a significant source of help. Eron wants to replace this with an expectation that people pay for their software, he wants to normalise paying for OSS so OSS doesn't have to rely on the companies. You can see this in how FUTO keyboard using language implying you need to pay to get a license, but also it holds no features back from you and doesn't nag if you don't pay.

Personally I welcome new ways of thinking but even if the pay for your OSS thing works I think companies are uniquely placed to contribute in ways that a small team relying on purchases is never going to be able to replicate.

I don't hold any ill will though, I think their heart is in the right place, albeit having missed what makes FOSS special.

I watched the launch coverage this morning after I woke up. Do other companies do funny things like checking in with the north pole on the preflight checks or is RocketLab a bit unique like that?

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 15 hours ago

Do guinea pigs burrow themselves? They seem like the kind of animal that would, so I found it interested that you dug tunnels for them.

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 3 points 15 hours ago

Haha yeah I do find the licence a bit weird. Kind of a non-commercial licence but there are definitely some parts that I don't quite get.

I have seen Eron Wolf talking a bit about what he is trying to do. I get his frustrations, but am not convinced their licence helps with those at all. You can't really take open source, take away some freedoms that are sometimes taken advantage of, and pretend that removing those freedoms didn't remove the benefits that are the reason those freedoms existed in the first place.

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 45 points 19 hours ago

Typically licenses not OSI approved are referred to as "Source available" rather than "Open source". This is one reason FUTO (who make Grayjay) refer to their license as "Source first" and not "Open Source" (though they did call it that for a while before clarifying and switching to the new term).

I think at some point you would just be in a routine and expect that routine to stay for the rest of your life, whether that's 3 or 30 years. Probably not a lot of planning to do at age 80, especially if you've already made it into a rest home, though someone will probably prove me wrong on that.

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 day ago

Ah OK, so good chance of being next year then.

Rescheduled for tomorrow morning but it's still 3am 😆. I struggle to stay up to midnight these days!

I just saw the announcement of Home Assistant's "Voice Preview", an open source alexa/google home/siri, and have ordered one on a whim.

For years I was following Mycroft which I was hopeful for but they had so many issues I never had confidence to put my money into it. Then they finally had a preorder of their product and it was like $200USD, and then eventually they folded. I have much more faith in Home Assistant delivering considering all their work on voice so far, and also it's a real product already ready to order and costs $59USD. So I ordered one on a whim.

It's called "Preview" because they don't think the experience is ready for the average home yet, better for early adopters and tinkerers. I am more than happy to tinker so I have taken the dive and am keen to see how good it is.

It took me so long to work out when Black Friday was because I started getting the emails in October saying their black Friday sale was on.

I luckily haven't had any boxing day sales emails yet. I guess they start as soon as they can't guarantee delivery before Christmas?

Last weeks thread here

Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

  • Something interesting that happened to you
  • Something humourous that happened to you
  • Something frustrating that happened to you
  • A quick question
  • A request for recommendations
  • Pictures of your pet
  • A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
  • Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

The coalition is tweaking university regulations to curb what it says is an increasingly "risk-averse approach" to free speech.

The proposed changes will set clear expectations on how universities should approach freedom of speech issues.

Each university will then have to adopt a "freedom of speech statement" consistent with the central government's expectations. The changes will also prohibit tertiary institutions from adopting positions on issues that do not relate to their core functions.

"Despite being required by the Education Act and the Bill of Rights Act to uphold academic freedom and freedom of expression, there is a growing trend of universities deplatforming speakers and cancelling events where they might be perceived as controversial or offensive.

New Zealand's oldest man and former prisoner of war James "Jim" Easton has celebrated another lap around the sun, hitting the grand old age of 108 this week.

When asked what he enjoyed most about his Army service, Easton replied: "Trying to get out!"

Many of Easton's friends suffered terrible nightmares, but he managed to develop a clever technique to prevent them.

"Whenever I felt one coming on I'd dream of nude women. That took it away immediately," he told the Herald after his 106th birthday.

In 2022, Easton was believed to be the first New Zealander to receive a birthday card from two monarchs: one from King Charles III for his 106th, and one from Queen Elizabeth II for his 100th.

TL;DR: Lemmy upgrade some time early in the new year. I also recently enabled image proxying, let me know if you noticed.

I thought I'd make a quick post just to explain the plan for updating Lemmy.nz to the latest Lemmy version and another recent change to image proxying.

Lemmy upgrade

Some of you make have noticed that Lemmy 0.19.8 just came out, and yet we are still on Lemmy 0.19.5.

There have been various bugs in 0.19.6 and 0.19.7 that while not critical, there was also no reason to rush the upgrade and I decided to wait for 0.19.8 which had a fix for some thumbnails not working that was broken in I think 0.19.6.

My plan is to give a little time to see if others have issues, and then upgrade to 0.19.8. Most likely this will be early in the new year. I don't believe there should be any significant downtime so I will probably just do it when I am ready. Before I do, I'll do a test run and see how long it takes, then decide then.

As always, I'll post on the Lemmy.nz Matrix chat before I do it, and if I am having any issues.

Image proxying

You may have noticed I have enabled imaged proxying some 3 or 4 weeks back. This means all images are loaded from the Lemmy.nz server instead of whichever instance is hosting it. Personally I have found there to be significantly less instances of an image not loading. I have also noticed some images load a bit slower than before, which I think is if the image is not already cached then Lemmy.nz has to download it, then you have to download it from Lemmy.nz, so this tends to happen more on smaller communities.

However, overall I feel like the experience is improved with image proxying turned on (even if it has doubled CPU usage of the server).

As always, happy to answer any questions and hear your feedback 🙂

A teenager appears to be lucky to be alive although he remained stuck after climbing a power pylon in Christchurch on Friday evening.

Just Perfect Detailing owner Josh Phillips was nearby as emergency services arrived and believes the teenage boy climbed the pole before grabbing the live wires.

"He's sweating, and he's got quite bad burns, there's red all over him. His shorts have disintegrated literally, and there were burned bits of fabric underneath the power line he climbed. His arms and legs are charred, and he's complaining he can't feel his legs and that he's cold."

This happened last night, but the article doesn't seem to have been updated (as of posting) this morning with any resolution.

New Plymouth dog owners play it safe when it comes to naming their pooches, with Bella proving the top dog in the naming stakes.

It is the most common dog name registered with the district council, with 155 pooches answering to Bella followed by Poppy (138), Charlie (122), Max (120) and Luna (118).

Animal Control Supervisor Scott Goldfinch said there were also more unusual choices.

"Then there are the unique names, like Autobot and Winnifred Wolf Allen. And personally, I really like Ronnie Barker."

The Workplace Relations Minister Brooke van Velden has announced plans to reintroduce pay deductions for partial strikes.

A partial strike is where the employee is still doing some form of their work. Employers have been banned from reducing the worker's pay since the previous Labour-led government removed that power in 2018.

ACT's van Velden said she recognised the entitlement of employees to strike, but the disruption caused "should not continue without consequence".

The Spinoff founder Duncan Greive says there's "no plan b" to save the website if an attempt to dramatically increase the number of paying supporters is not successful.

He and The Spinoff's chief executive Amber Easby and editor Madeleine Chapman issued an open letter on Thursday, outlining the financial predicament of the platform.

"Two of those buckets have been leaking hard lately. The steep decline in advertising for local media has been well documented. We're no different - we've just seen the worst monthly decline since the business was founded.

The Spinoff also discovered on Friday that all of its proposals had been declined in another round of NZ on Air funding, for the second time in a row.

"Meanwhile, our Creative NZ funding has been halved this year, and the Public Interest Journalism Fund, which currently supports two roles within our small team of 31, is due to finish next year. While the state is under no obligation to fund our work, it's hard to watch as other platforms continue to be heavily backed while your own funding stops dead."

They said as a result, as well as reducing staff count, The Spinoff had frozen virtually all external editorial commission and put newsletters on hiatus. It had also paused publication of The Friday Poem.
