Heh. I played this at a Christmas street party years ago, and I had a gaggle of bitter old women march towards me, intent on causing trouble. They told me the song's satanic because "imagine no religion" is exactly the same thing as "imagine no God/spiritual presence". I replied that the song is actually about the kind of religion that turns people nasty, like them. I turned around to get support from my band, only to see them half a mile down the road. Very memorable Christmas street party, that one.

Indeed there is value in that. And sometimes that's possible and should be pursued. But there are some people I can't discuss pizza toppings with, because I can't accept their underlying world view. It's difficult to find a good balance at scale, which is why everything is becoming so horrible. Something will have to (positively) change at some point, because the current state is unsustainable.

I tried Mastodon, multiple times, and it always has this icky political feel to it. Sort of like a left wing version of Twitter, which I also hate. Bluesky is even worse in this regard IME. Haven't tried Sharkey. I'll have a look at some of the alternatives in this thread.

I was already sick of what reddit was turning into, then it went full Spez and ruined the place completely. Lemmy was the only thing close that I could find. So here I am.

I was thinking sweet pancakes, because you could add sugar to almonds and it would be desserty (maybe?). But you seem to know more about this than I do, so I'll try some savoury ones. Cheers.

No problem. I'll just scroll past it. 👍

Milk, some eggs, cheese, onion, carrot, butter, pasta, small amount of rice, bread, some herbs... That's basically it.

It looks like a fine powder. Pancakes I can do, I might try that. Cheers.

If the title is clickbaity or deliberately void of context, I scroll past. If the title gives a reasonable idea of what the context is, I read on.

So I got a small bag of almond meal and I know nothing about it, except that it's mainly used for baking (which I'm hopeless at). I'm broke and low on food so I can't afford to not eat it, or get a recipe really wrong. Is there anything with almond meal I can cook in a fry pan or in a grill?

Well, it's going to be a pretty miserable Christmas for me, and I'm sure for others too. I figured it would be a good idea to have some place on Lemmy (I checked the Christmas instance and the last post was 2 years ago...) where those at a loose end could at least have each other for company throughout the Christmas period. Any ideas on how to make this happen appreciated!

Hello!

I tried a lot of other Lemmy apps, and the browser version, and none of them quite worked. But so far, Voyager seems to work well, and the settings are easy to navigate, even for a luddite like me. Good stuff. Keep up the good work! 👍

Hi! I just watched Tokyo Grandfathers and season 1 of Rewrite, and am quickly developing a taste for anime. Problem is, where does a noob start? I'm not overly into fight scenes - it's OK if it's important to the story, but I don't like fight scenes/explosions etc for their own sake. I like anime with a good storyline, relatable characters, make you think, and some cheeky bits of humour. Any recommendations appreciated!

I'm not a huge movie fan, but I want to broaden my horizons a bit. I'll offer my list (that I've rewatched so many times I'm a bit tired of them):

  • Young Poisoner's Handbook

  • Full Metal Jacket

  • Life of Brian

  • Holy Grail

  • Sunset Boulevard

  • Curse of the Golden Flower

  • The Nightingale

  • Downfall

  • Amadeus

  • Once Were Warriors

  • Dusk to Dawn

I would say it's not possible. The art IS the artist. The art only is what it is because the artist is who they are. But a lot of people seem to be very comfortable with the idea of separating the art from the artist. What say Lemmy?

I've clicked on everything and I can't find a setting for it. It's infuriating! I'm using the Connect app, btw.

Edit: I've changed to Summit and the settings are much more straightforward.
