There's an app that does this pretty well called Ground News. For a given topic it will show the coverage across the political spectrum. However, I didn't think that this community was limited to English? Either way, I guess you could start putting one together.

Is this really something we need more of?

[-] Knoll0114@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Conversation about hot topics is going to happen no matter what. As long as it stays respectful I think it's ok.

I suppose the counterargument would be that being indigenous is both an identity and a need. I do agree with you though that this isn't a good solution.

To be fair there was no one tracking the migrant boat because they were crossing illegally. We knew the sub went missing basically as soon as it did rather than when people started spotting bodies. In situations where migrant boats are found before/in the midst of sinking help is sent (although after that it's probably a trip to the detention centre.)

I think it's controversial because it is a dedicated group/voice for 3.2% of the population which no other minority group would be getting (eg. Croatian-Australians or Mauritian-Australians etc.) That means the indigenous vote would mean more on certain issues (by design) than the non-indigenous. Arguably this can be a good thing because indigenous people have been marginalised more than other groups, and it may lead to better outcomes for them. However, it still represents decision-making/representation becoming distinguished by ethnicity in a codified way.

This plus they specifically didn't like the openness of these communities vs. their more stringent process (since they're trying to create a specific vibe.)

Beehaw has decided to defederate from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works. I believe it was already separated from lemmygrad. I think this makes this community the largest one accessible to the most instances whereas before Literature@beehaw.org was. I guess we'll have to make the most of it!

Calibre and Hugo! (lemmy.world)

I've created Calibre for the Calibre software and Hugo for the Hugo static website generator.

I'm thinking we should have a central post for all the book sublemmys so we can easily find them. The ones I'm aware of are: Lemmy:

Fediverse:

Sublemmys in other languages would be great to add here too! I'll keep adding more as I find them.

I keep searching for it on my phone before realising I deleted the app 🙃

To be fair 'no one needs it' isn't entirely true. There are many reasons someone who needs to get around might not be able to drive. For example, some people with epilepsy, senior citizens, teenagers going to work etc. I don't need it but I'd love the convenience and stress relief of never having to drive again. Public transport could help some of this but some areas just aren't populated enough for truly good public transport.

I'm shocked it isn't already regulated. I get it's a developing technology but cars can be murderous.

I recently discovered Bookwyrm and am really liking it. It's not quite as full-featured as The Storygraph or Goodreads but it covers all of the most important functionalities and it's federated which I appreciate. Something that it is missing Vs either The Storygraph or Goodreads at the moment is volume of reviews (ie. Volume of users.) However, your review won't get lost in the sea so much and I've found that it's been quite easy to find readers with similar interests.

Anyway, who here is using Bookwyrm? What's your account so we can all follow each other? (Mine is Unfreeze4257@books.theunseen)

Unlike many other large subreddits r/books has not made any statements about the API changes. I did try and post something about it but it ended up getting deleted. At 22.1 million users this would be a pretty significant addition to the protest.

Does anyone know why there hasn't been anything official?

Way more fun than communities! Plus it speaks to the Reddit exodus in a bit of a tongue in cheek way.

I don't think veganism really works to whitewash the crimes of either the Israeli or Saudi Arabian government. Even for vegans, those crimes are probably some of the first things they think of when we hear of those countries. It is good that Tel Aviv has a decent vegan scene, and it is good that Al Waleed is having some vegan influence. However, I don't think veganism is considered so good to most people that it really does anything to mask those issues (and it certainly doesn't make up for them.) For what it's worth (not much) I do agree that the praise of Al Waleed is worse since Tel Aviv is made up of many more parts than the Saudi Arabian royalty and I don't think the average Israeli resident has as much power as Al Waleed.
