I appreciate the offer but the text is all in French so most online friends can't read it which is part of the issue ๐Ÿ˜“

Honestly, I feel pretty discouraged to work on my book about the history of my student union. I fear that it will fall on deaf ears and I feel that no one really cares about it. It's a pretty long project as well.

Otherwise, I'm glad that my session is over. I'm still looking for a job though.

Yes - I did scan some of the newspapers I wanted with microform. Unfortunately, the quality for the student newspapers rendered certain block of texts and pictures unreadable. It's still an invaluable resource!

For what I'm looking into, which is mostly primary documents, I thankfully don't need to worry too much about mistakes - I'm mostly worried about missing documentation (no meeting minutes, no student newspaper) and unreported events.

I just wanted to say thank you since I forgot to answer (I've been off socials for a bit)

How exactly can you be a non-expansionist Zionist if the existence of Israel necessitated the Nakba? How can you rationally justify the existence of the Israeli state if you refuse population displacement?

I find it hard to find a good faith argument this position.

That's pretty unfortunate. I think Pocket was probably one of the best services that Mozilla offered (outside of Pocket). I find it worrisome if Pocket was not a profitable avenue for them.

I used it for a while as my read-it-later but it ended up being too expensive for the usage I made of it.

I'm pretty worried about Mozilla as a whole. I feel that none of the projects I remember in the past 15 years have actually worked out. Pocket, CommonVoice, Servo, Mozilla Location Services.. It's a shame, really.

I hope for them that Relay and VPN still manage to work out though I've never really been interested in either unfortunately.

That's a good tip - so far what I've done is I have this note in Zotero of "Things to enter into bibliography".

The way I keep track of information source is that every sentence I write has atleast one source. This is probably a bad way to do things as I now have 180 footnotes and I'm not nearly done with the first decade.

I'm currently doing research to cover 50 years of history for a student union.

Most of the documentation comes from primary sources - minutes, photos, student newspapers. It's so many documents. 50 years is a long time it turns out.

I'm currently managing sources using Zotero and putting information down in Microsoft Word. I currently divide my sources by decade.

Do you have any tips from doing similar types of research?

Well, you can disable window controls in gnome and KDE afaik if you want. Then you'll only have the various app-specific buttons that are necessary for functionality.

If you're looking for every app to have a vim-like interface or something, well, that seems a bit unrelated to CSDs.

Hmmm, I honestly thought this was going to explore the topic of people that are in the closet about their gender identity. Or maybe, plural people. I find this video more confusing than anything.

I think the way you describe it is perhaps too abstract for me to understand the points you're making.

I find this passage rather distressing however "Pronouns reference the framework you expect someone to use to process your words". I find that language scary sounding. It feels like specifying someone's pronouns is forcing an ideology or status on someone and I just don't think that's true at all.

I also don't think saying gender has "dedicated pronouns" is really accurate. Neopronouns exist and they still confer meaning to the person so I don't think it's a defined set. Different languages also have different pronoun systems which complicate creating a specific set.

I find the third argument kind of odd. I think that displaying pronouns in general has the same effect you're describing without the need for different pronouns in different spaces. The same thing is true for things like a role bot or other tools to allow people to display their pronouns.

Honestly, I don't really understand the hate that client-side decorations get. I find that they're generally pretty useful and good.

I think a lot of it comes from people who want to 'rice' and theme their desktops but I personally think that dream has sailed. The kind of theming people want on Linux systems is simply not possible without massive amounts of work and downgrades to accessibility, security and usability.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but for clarification, the fact they're drawn by the client actually means they can always be the same across different environments. This is in opposition to server-side decorations which are drawn by the desktop environment and should match the environment as a result. That said, server-side decorations are largely much less extensible than client side ones.

Unsurprisingly, coming back on an alt to call moderators incompetent is going to be reason for a ban.

If you want to actually discuss a ban, use support@beehaw.org with your account name.

I think we would probably keep applications to allow people who may not have friends that can invite them here. We may be more strict with the answers though.

I, personally would still like to allowlist places which I think are pretty good. Though, ideally I would like one-way federation so beeple can still explore places which don't necessarily meet the standard we set for allowlist.

I've recently been thinking a lot about self-destruction.

I've been thinking about how passion and destruction are interlinked. I've also thought that for creation to exist, destruction must proceed it.

I've had quite the difficulty to try and make sense of these feelings. I thought I'd try to explain and explore this idea with other people.

So here I am - Let's start from the premise above.

Only ever had experiences with Reddit, Lemmy and very little bit of Discourse.

I don't really want to reveal my identity online and I've been trying to find how I can do that. It seems like Patreon is the only one that acts as a middleman between you and the donator but it only does monthly subscriptions which I don't really want to have..

After some discussions in !chat, we came up with the conclusion we should adopt rules surrounding bots.

We'll ban bots which we are aware of that currently don't follow these rules and contact their creators. Please report bots that don't follow these.

Kind of a broad question. I wonder why people take notes - Is it for studies or learning? Is it just to remember things? Is it to make your own map of your knowledge? Is it because you just want a place to vent out your feelings into the void?

What do you use to accomplish that? App? Paper? A chat room?
