They should have been forced to do it the other way. “You advertise as free, so you have to provide this for free.”

You’ve probably seen several YouTube videos where people claim they have heard from, “someone in the know” that AMD isn’t making high end versions of their next video cards.

https://youtu.be/va8nyj6y7d4

https://youtu.be/YZtEcPadqrs

This is so damned much bullshit, chicken little is laughing at the sky falling…

It’s HALF a story.

The FACT is AMD has just released a paper regarding a more efficient method of computing object locations in a scene when ray tracing.

Currently the method used is called the Monte Carlo method. It is computationally intensive and requires… HARDWARE.

AMD has come up with a method (called Neural Intersection Function) that is 150% more efficient. This means that EXISTING hardware will… do what?

AMD can build cards that use less hardware, use less power, and what do you suppose that means?

LESS COST FOR MORE PERFORMANCE! So when you see the nonsense that “AMD is exiting building GPU’s…” No, they are building 150% more efficient GPU’s, at lower cost while the cost of graphics cards is going back up.

Could you please create a middle ground between the nuclear option (banning sites) and the whack a mole option of banning users. It would be effective to be able to ban communities (at least temporarily) during bot spam attacks while you wait for admins to police up their site. Could there also be a way for admins to notify other admins that their site is spamming garbage so that admins know that their board is the cause of a problem and what that problem is?

I’m thinking of all the times I’ve said, “You know what makes this game great? The microtransactions.” All ZERO times.

There are bad games and good games. Microtransactions make bad games worse AND good games worse. I intentionally only pay for games without microtransactions. THEY move the game from “I’m interested” (like with the rerelease of dungeon keeper) to “Well, I can play the OG version on GOG. Without microtransactions, I’ll do that.”

That business model ONLY works out for the business. It is NOT for the best interest of the customer.

So while what you said is right, you are incorrect.

After hearing the creator of Rick and Morty was involved with this game I was GOING to recommend:

High on Life is a cosmic adventure game that unfolds on an Earth attacked by the G3 cartel, extraterrestrial beings who exploit humans as drugs. The protagonist, a directionless high school graduate turned space bounty hunter, embarks on a mission to halt the invasion. Alongside the hero are his sentient and vocal weapons known as Gatlians, providing commentary and guidance throughout the journey. The game's interstellar journey spans across various cosmic locations, such as a jungle and a city built on an asteroid's surface, encountering both hostile and neutral characters. The player uses a unique arsenal to combat enemies, including a pistol, rifle, shotgun, knife, and a distinctive grenade launcher that shoots “baby grenades." Alongside battling adversaries, players solve simple puzzles and upgrade equipment in this captivating game.

STOP

While this sounds good, if you google “High on Life” you’re going to find LOTS of configuration recommendations on how to adjust the video…

So it’s even playable.

One guy had a 7950 CPU and a 4070 GPU and couldn’t get the game to 60 fps…

The last patch for the game was in March.

OTOH

RECENT user reviews are VERY POSITIVE AND it is fully verified for the Steam Deck.

So what am I saying? The bugs MAY be fixed based on available information. YMMV

Back when Red v.s. Blue didn’t lead to a 4 count indictment.

2

Well, I guess it IS boomer shooter material… kinda?

An opinion on why AMD graphics cards get overlooked.

3

This is a game type that I can find everywhere but in the iOS ecosystem. Got any recommendations?

What are your three favorite boomer shooters in no particular order?

First, I’d have to thank Warhammer 40K Boltgun for bringing me back to the fold.

Second, I’d thank Doom(2016) for kinda filling in and keeping interest alive.

Third, I’d go back to the first 3D shooter I bought, Heretic.

Chasm: The Rift, also known as Chasm: The Shadow Zone, is a first-person shooter video game developed by Action Forms and published in 1997 by GT Interactive Software, WizardWorks, and Megamedia Corp. Intended to compete with Quake, the game was released after GT Interactive lost publishing rights to Activision. The player embodies an unnamed Marine tasked with thwarting the invasion of the "Timestrikers", mutant beings that threaten different time epochs. The gameplay journey spans various locations, from modern military bases to ancient Pharaonic tombs, typically characterized by dark, catacomb-like corridors. A standout feature of the game was the ability to dismember enemies.

Originating from Ukraine, Chasm: The Rift is recognized as an innovative FPS title from its era and the first Eastern European "boomer shooter". It offers an exhilarating journey through the Corridors of Time and the thrill of ripping limbs from monstrous foes with the iconic BladeGun. The game also features an advanced weather system. With recent updates, players can now experience this late 90's classic on modern PCs, complete with full 4K support, enhanced sound design, and achievement systems. It's also been localized into twelve languages, making it accessible to a wider global audience.

Pull up a list of Lemmy instances with 100% uptime. That’s not a big list. Look for a location in the U.S. you find an even smaller list. And if your monolingual and speak English bestest… well, then you’re in the realm of a vary small list indeed.

lemmy.ninja is second on that list for size AND speed of growth. Plus, where else are you going to find communities that teach you how to use the Fediverse to your advantage? Drop by and subscribe to the boomer shooter community… We all know they did it right in lo-fi…

In a Mastodon instance there is unidirectional communication. I can mute someone. That seems like a function that would be useful here. Is there a way to mute their instance (nothing inbound from them to my server) but they can receive from me? Why would I ask this? The minute I treat someone as though they are irredeemable, there is no reason for them to try to achieve redemption. If what we do here, all of us, is honorable, they’ll be able to see that. To some degree this can cause… Let’s call it dissension in the ranks.

We block their noise inbound to our servers, yes. But let them see the difference between what their pundits tell them, and what actually is.

Or, I may be completely wrong. I’ve been labeled an edgelord for having this position.

Thanks for the good news. I’ll let rotarykeyboard know. He’ll be ecstatic.

[-] MrEUser@lemmy.ninja 17 points 1 year ago

The problem is, this isn’t just a challenge to beliefs. This is the internet. The darkest most depraved shit that can exist… does. People forcing children to do things with animals… I’ll stop there…

The U.S. constitution supports free speech. Even it has limits. You can’t yell fire in a movie theater and not face the consequences of injuries your speech causes.

The problem with these lists is that people sneak things on to them.

I’m an admin on (and owner of) lemmy.ninja. We have clear anti-harassment rules, up front, in bold, front page. We have zero bots (checked daily). We have users that are LGBTQIA+. I have zero tolerance for bigotry.

Yet our site is on the lists provided.

Apparently it doesn’t matter (the lists don’t work) because all of my cross posts (from my boomer shooter community) are available on beehaw.org in their gaming section.

So these lists can be used as weapons, if they work. When thy don’t work they are just an indictment without evidence.

[-] MrEUser@lemmy.ninja 8 points 1 year ago

The fact that we’re not talking about arena shooters would be a big reason.

[-] MrEUser@lemmy.ninja 13 points 1 year ago

“IDK why the OG FPS are now a considered subgenre”

I don’t know why people keep thinking, saying, and implying this. The OG shooters are not being called “boomer shooters.” Modern games based on them are. I don’t know why the confusion.

Doom (1993) NOT a boomer shooter. Quake (1996) NOT a boomer shooter. Boltgun (2023) IS a boomer shooter.

[-] MrEUser@lemmy.ninja 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I completely agree with the generational… “faux pas” in the naming. But it SOUNDS good… boomer shooter… I’ve also heard retroFPS. I wasn’t a fan when these originally came out. I was too busy with more “complex” hoity-toity puzzlers and “deep” rpg’s… Now that I’m almost 50, I enjoy the HELL out of Boltgun. If you buy ONE game… I HIGHLY recommend it. It starts with the pedal to the metal and then hits turbo at some point (you’re too busy to notice). REALLY… give it a try.

I don't know how to make this not about me. So, I'm just going to say it. Friday I closed a 13 year old Reddit account. Saturday and Sunday I brought up multiple Fediverse servers. I now have Mastodon, Lemmy, PixelFed, Owncast, and NextCloud working. I have yet to get Element Chat and PeerTube running. They will happen by Friday. When I opened my Owncast I killed my Twitch account. When PeerTube is up and running I drop YouTube. My point is, I want to thank Reddit for providing me the motivation to leave corporate social media and switch to my own platform. I'm not going back... I'm going forward.
