You can definitely make the case that FDIC should ideally cover all deposits, but it doesn't. If the taxpayer is going to give certain people retroactive insurance they should also be paying retroactive premiums.
Agreed. I don't like the characterization of 'being loyal to your principles even when it's politically inconvenient' as an own-goal. This kind of thing tells us more about the author than the subject.

This is a great point, and the same logic applies to someone who's destitute vs someone with the median net worth of about $100,000. The average person could give away half of their net worth to feed a bunch of people in the developing world and it wouldn't ruin their life, but we don't. We're all less guilty of ignoring the suffering of others that a billionaire is, but not without blame.
