I had this thought the other day but we would be in such a weird timeline if the U.S. had sexenios like they do in Mexico rather than 2 4-year terms. Sure things would be like 99% similar and it’d just be changes in who manages capitalism, but if I had to guess it’d be like this:

Bush would be president from 2000-2006, so everything would be the same in that regard. While Obama may have a shot at presidency in a 2006 election since he first gained attention for his 2004 DNC speech, he can’t run on hope and change in response to the 2008 Recession so I think Hillary Clinton would actually have a better chance and would be president from 2006-2012. Foreign policy would likely be the same, maybe even more hawkish, but the recession would happen under her presidency rather than Bush which is just hilarious to think about. But also, without Obama, Trump doesn’t gain the political clout he did with the birtherism, so I think from 2012-2018, the likely president would be Mitt Romney (or maybe even Ted Cruz?) to “stabilize” capitalism after Clinton and the 2008 Recession, especially as the bailouts would be framed as establishment Democrat governance. Maybe even the ACA passes under a Romney presidency instead which would also be hilarious. But you’d have the same factors that contributed to the election of Trump in the mid 2010s (Rust Belt deindustrialization, immigration, social media, austerity, etc.) so I think you’d have some sort of populist campaign, maybe Bernie or a non-Trump Republican populist. If Bernie wins, he’d be president during COVID, 2022 inflation, Ukraine war, Gaza genocide, etc., which would be pretty disasterous for the perception of “democratic socialism” in America meaning you’d probably get someone like Ron DeSantis (or even Tucker Carlson) in 2024-2030. But if a Republican won in 2018, you’d probably get like a Gavin Newsome in 2024 as a “return to normalcy” president like Biden but without Biden as he wouldn’t have the Obama stimulus.

That was kind of a long winded alt history fan fic but we would be so close to having a slightly “funnier” timeline if we were a little more like Mexico (idk if funny is the right word considering all of the horrible things still happen, but like first woman president? Recession. A republican passing the ACA instead of Obama. Social democracy becoming completely unviable in American electoral politics, etc). Someone should make like a Disco Elysium type game in this timeline

There’s also a Georg Lukács-George Lucas joke to be made here but I can’t figure it out

Now that Andor is over they should make a Saw Gerrera tv show where he and his rebel faction are basically stand ins for Gonzalo and the Shining Path

Yeah you’re right but honestly I feel like that’s still better than decking your car out in Empire stuff. And also red lightsabers are cool

Does anyone have any information on the workers councils forming in Arak? I saw the statement from the CPIRAN but don’t have telegram and I can’t speak Farsi

Antisemitism is 100% the biggest obstacle toward class consciousness right now and it’ll only get worse in the future. It’s ridiculous how “normal” it’s becoming among regular people, and how these talking points are becoming accepted in leftist spaces. I’ve seen leftists say stuff along the lines of “well we shouldn’t be antisemitic, but it’s true that a majority of capitalist owners are Jewish and that Jewish Americans are the richest demographic in America” like no we don’t have to concede false statistics to the “#noticers”. Protestant Anglo Saxon CEOs and upper middle class Indian American households would like a word with you

It’s actually so shocking and concerning how normalized and acceptable antisemitism has become in just the last 2-3 years. Maybe I’m too online, but I’ve seen way too many TikToks of regular people casually believing antisemitic conspiracies like them controlling media, owning most businesses, etc. This might be too niche of a reference, but there’s this popular underground rapper named Boolymon and his lyrics have so much casual antisemitism in them (“Won’t let these Jews control me” “Jews run the news boy I thought you knew”) and no one bats an eye or even mentions it (and if they do mention it they’re supporting it). I remember when this stuff was fringe and now it’s everywhere

The Pacers play Marxist basketball, whereas OKC plays neoliberal basketball (dirty defense, foul baiting)

copy and pasting this from the daily discussion thread: “struggling so hard with my philosophy paper where we have to analyze any philosopher’s thoughts on ethics we agree with and abide by because i disagree with everyone we’ve learned about in some way 😭 aristotelian virtue ethics, kantian ethics, existentialism, and utilitarianism just have way too many idealist and individualist flaws for me to get behind

are there any prominent philosophers whose thoughts on ethics are compatible with materialism, determinism, etc., and advocate for things like empathy, liberation, etc.?”

i’m fairly young (20M) but i’ve been experiencing some hair loss since i’ve been about 16, i’m pretty healthy i just have the genes for it since every man on both sides of my family is bald & maybe some hormonal factors driving it idk. my hair loss rn isn’t THAT bad, my hairline has receded to the point that i definitely have a pennyworth style widow’s peak (the batman tv show) when i lift my hair up and the top in general is much thinner than it used to be but i don’t have any bald spots and you’d have to try to see through to my scalp (probably also helps that i have semi-curly medium-long hair).

anyways, to stop my hair loss from getting any worse, i’ve been taking topical minoxidil finasteride for the past 9ish months (dermatologist recommended it since they said the side effects were worse for the pill form) and honestly it seems like it’s been working, my hairline hasn’t receded anymore and my hair feels much thicker even if it isn’t the same as it was before.

however, the topical minoxidil finasteride gives me the WORSE dark circles around my eyes like i look like a panda or a raccoon. and it’s more than that i look like a zombie, like my face is slightly more pale/grey than the usual white/olive skin color. i recently ran out and couldn’t refill before i went on a family trip and my dark circles were completely gone by the end of the week and my skin in general looked so much healthier.

so i’m stuck wondering what should i do? i can’t get a straight answer out of google so hopefully someone in the comments can help (i should probably schedule another visit with the dermatologist but i just haven’t had the time yet). i want my hair and don’t want to lose it, especially so young, but i hate my eyes and face looking like that and i’m sure i’m harming my body by using it if it’s having that effect, so i’m wondering if there are any other solid options i can do for my hair? anyone else with similar experience that found something that worked for them?

i’m sorry if this makes some users here feel old lol but i was a preteen and apolitical obviously when this happened so i genuinely know nothing about this situation. does it have anything to do with nato? i’m just curious to get a marxist analysis of this situation

i’m about to start a 5-7 page research paper for my world history class about any significant historical events, people, ideological movements, etc., that take place anywhere between 1500-now and i’m not 100% sure about what to write. i was kinda interested in maybe writing about the french revolution but i’m sure there’s better stuff out there, i was also considering writing about marxism/class struggle or the russian revolution but idk if it’s a good idea to go full blown tankie LMAO but i might change my mind idk

so yeah just wondering if anyone can think of any fun topics to research and write about for my paper, any personal favorite pieces of history in that time frame, etc?

edit: i don’t have the time to respond to every comment but all these suggestions are amazing i’m definitely going to use one of these, thank you everyone!

i just love it’s dark and almost mythic nautical, maritime vibes and i just can’t find anything else that even resembles that

so if anyone knows of any movies (or any other media) that resemble that please drop them in the comments

i got written up at work today for “not smiling” and in their rule book it mentions smiling at customers, representing the company in a positive manner, etc., and about a half hour of research has led me to believe that my employer is violating federal law as the nlrb ruled that your employer can’t force you to act happy/smile/be positive at work

i know it’s small but still fuck them
