I love Lemmy, but I really struggle with the content here. Of course things are a little bare, but I have been able to find some really good stuff. My engagement is a lot higher here than on Reddit. However I find the litany of anti-work and political/left/right posts insufferable. They're everywhere here. At least on Reddit I felt like I could insulate myself reasonably well from political stuff. c/mildlyinfuriating is an example of this. At least half of the posts I come across are blatantly political or are anti-work. I get it, work sucks and you don't want to work and rich people/landlords bad. R/mildlyinfurating is a much better sub than ours is a community, imo. But I can't surround myself with this kind of Lemmy content every day because it just angers me and I didn't go to reddit to be angry every day. I have found myself drifting back to reddit for 60% of my usage. I hope this changes. I've tried to sub to different communities as well to limit how much I have to read about the latest communists and nazis and racists/fascists and tankies and all that Lemmy bullshit. Clearly I need to do a better job.

That just sounds like free advertising. No one would actually connect the Sunoco name to a forest fire...but Sunoco would get their company name repeated millions of times per day on web and TV network traffic free of charge. No thanks.

Am I the only one on mobile that tapped the comment button in the screenshot at least once? Sync had me HOOKED.

Jeez I read shower SHITTERS and came to laugh at all of the weirdos. Thankfully I don't have to write off humanity as early as usual this morning.

I don't feel a need to stay up to date, no. But reading about what those idiots think doesn't hurt my ego or ruin my day. I just like to have an idea of what the "enemy" is thinking. I don't want to live in an echo chamber. The sub isn't even THAT bad compared to what I was expecting. They've got some gross posts, don't get me wrong. But it's not NEARLY bad enough to warrant defederating. Most of the posted content is moderate-right. Defederating is silly in this case.

Defederation should be the LAST and FINAL option. From what I understand, this is a small instance that isn't causing much trouble outside of their instance. Block them on your own! I'm on lemmy.world, but personally I would like to keep up to date on the shit they post. I don't think we should start going around defederating communities that we disagree with, even though their opinions are shit, vile, offensive, and disgusting. Leave it up and block them on your own.

Edit: 10 years ago I used to be one of those intolerable fucks. Yes - exactly like them. Until I talked to other people on Reddit, real life, and listened to other ideas. I had a change of heart and hope even a couple of them could too. It happens.

wow - I can't thank you enough for the redirection to that post. I don't know how I missed that post so far this morning. Thanks again.

I've actually had a great time making posts and contributing to conversations here. Everyone on these new subs wants to get the ball rolling, so any input usually brings something to the table. !Motorcycles went from 17 subs and 0 posts 5 days ago...to 230 subs now and a page full of posts and comments.

Yesterday I was at the gas station putting a small puff of air in my tires after getting my bike out for the first time this year. In a span of 10 seconds this 70-year-old guy gets out of his Jeep and wants to "thank me" on behalf of his massive Harley chapter and shakes my hand and then proceeds to kiss my bike's tank gas cap. I'm totally taken aback and was so caught off guard I didn't know how to respond. Guy ended up being a super nice guy in town for a fishing trip. We had a great conversation, but...what a way to greet a stranger. Now that I think about it, I think the lip marks are probably still on there. Where's my microfiber?

Thanks for coming! I just joined as well and am really enjoying myself. There's definitely enough for me here to entertain myself and it might only grow larger and broader. I think about it this way - I believe there's a higher chance that Lemmy will go through a "golden age" as opposed to Reddit which seems to be way past its own.

I lived without a garage/enclosure on a lake where horrible wind, floods, bugs, rain, "nature crud," and spiders ruined and weathered everything. I looked online for enclosures and small buildings that would also be convenient to ride in and out of frequently. Many sealed hard plastic motorcycle enclosures were $2/3k+ and sold overseas. A zipper bag enclosure/bubble would get absolutely shredded by wind and water where I lived. I finally considered getting a small and cheaper trailer with multiple use cases! It cost me around $3600 but is also incredibly useful for many other uses as well (moving, transporting large objects, etc). I installed rubberized flooring and a condor wheel chock inside as well. The large door helps me easily ride in and out with a convenient side door for working on the bike. Even a year later, the inside has remained completely "sterile." No bugs and is dry with low humidity. Consider an option like this if you don't have space for a new building, don't have a garage, or would have use for a trailer to begin with.

edit: as discussed below, always consider the level of crime in your community to determine whether or not something like this would work for you.
