It doesn't seem to be the case with distros like Mint. I even know folks who have Mint but they have no clue about tech or computers at all. As users they can hardly tell difference. And It's actually easier on them because it doesn't get all messy as Windows does for non tech folks, so there is almost no maintenance needed. I very much recommended it for granparents and such, so you don't have to go fixing their Windows PC each visit because they downloaded tons of random danger ware by not understanding what they do.

Sometimes it's actually better with dark background on direct sun.

If we are talking about devices screen, white background kinda goes yellow on direct sun and contrast reduces. But black background goes dark grey and less light gets reelected back to the eyes.

If we are talking old school paper ( SHOCKING i know ). It's close to unreadable on direct sun when paper is white because it shines back too bright, it hurts eyes but black paper it much more comfy on eyes.

Note: Reason why black on white was used historicaly is most likely economical. (Less paint, easy to maintain.) If papyrus naturally turned black, all written text might have been in "dark mode" from the beginning.

This picture is wrong. Whole world is shaped like Murica . nothing else is known to man or so they say.

I moved to Lemmy over from reddit not because of content or better UI but because people behind reddit seems like jerks to me and i came to realization I'd rather use open source.
What i lack here is information e.g. programming communities in Lemmy are, well, dead. If left on Lemmy things that are "recommended" to me it's sensational "news" that are aimed to spark woke vs others battle in discussion.

So what to make better ?

  • to build what reddit has, I'd call it a content library and i don't care if it's done by bots or humans. For me the facts + discussion to ask question is super important.
  • if searching for a topic outside of Lemmy> Lemmy doesn't show up in search engine but reddit does. Some optimization needs to be done to get better score at search engines.
  • let users to block instances and thus make de-federation to user's decision.
  • i think there needs to some kind of cross instance community, i don't think having same kind of community in multiple instances with different content is good solution.

I'd say that I'm rather anti communistic but one thing that has never happened in used-to-be communist country i have experience with is starvation.
Actually they solved starvation, built fcking appartments for everyone to live in and gave them to people for free. They also made sure every forgotten village had drinakble water, electricity , gas, shop, train station and bus stop.

Reason why people overthrown them was humans rights repression like taking away people's businesses to make them state companies. It was not poor the living conditions (for the time).

They realized that Netflix is heading six feet under , Amazon sucks so they can go back to making profit.

I think it's rather because Hammas produced the video with her being pressed into back of their truck in unnatural position half naked and paraded trough the Gaza streets while tens or maybe hundreds people were celebrating her humiliation . But i might be wrong. 🤷‍♂️

I can (probably) sum it as "Person's freedom ends where rights of other begins."

For those on Android, workaround might be Rossman's new app (the guy fixing Apple PCs). Promise seem kinda alternative NewPipe app but with platforms (e.g.YouTubes) algoritms, following creators across different platform and possibility to log in to your accounts.

It has opensource plugins capabilities so if it gets popular it might keep growing and living from comunity support as well.

I'm not affiliated with that. I'm also yet the app. This is not add. AFAIK app is not monetized at this point.

Let me first say i agree but also let me be little bit hopefully constructively critical.

There is something called (backwards) rationalism.

... a defense mechanism in which apparent logical reasons are given to justify behavior that is motivated by unconscious instinctual impulses. ..

Rationalism also uses logic but not in sense as e.g. math of physic does. So logic is not enough in this broad sense.

So I think that basic science is the way to go in the early education stages alongside with teaching of accepting self critique and mistakes. Showing that everyone can be wrong and can become better at the thing by fixing their mistakes.

So in other words philosophy could make sense in high schools to some degree.
