If you’re on iOS, Arctic made some big updates that make it arguably better than Voyager IMO. The biggest thing that got me was color picker themes, so you can literally make your own theme (and save and share them). Also the markdown is pretty great now. Voyager is still pretty solid and very good performance and features.

I would like to eventually begin growing my own food and herbs. Do any of you have good book recommendations for growing food, herbs, or possibly herbal medicine?

I know there are a million options, so a few places to start would be really helpful. I want to start with herbs in a raised planter. I’m in the midwest US, so I’ll bring the herbs into an indoor greenhouse cabinet during the winter.

The larger scale of trying to eat only my own vegetables and maybe chickens/goats would likely be in the distant future.

This seemed like a nice spring-y thing to look at. I hope you enjoy it.

I made a joiners mallet. I’m trying to challenge myself by only hand tools. The wood was found in the basement; I think hickory head and I have no idea what the handle pieces are. The handle and head were each laminated and the handle was mortised in, wedged, and glued. I rounded out the handle with a spokeshave and rasp.

There are plenty of things I could have done differently, but I’m just glad I pushed myself to finish it. And now have a fairly heavy-duty mallet, so I dont need to swing on the chisels as hard. I think if I were to make another one, I would find a single block of wood for the head instead of laminating cut pieces.

I would like to wood burn some designs into a nightstand but may want to add more burning down the road, after I coat it with shellac. From what I could gather, people mentioned to only burn and then seal, otherwise the burning after the shellac could cause issues, like releasing inhalants. Is that really an issue with shellac since it is “natural”?

I can’t tell if I’m sharpening incorrectly or if my file is just worn out. Is there a way to tell? I read somewhere to replace after like five sharpening a but that seems really short.

If I close the app for a few minutes and then reopen it, I’ll usually swipe down to refresh the post I was on, and the app crashes.

I recently started learning hand tool woodworking and won’t shut up about it haha. I found a few books and channels that are helpful and feel real. The more I do it, the more it’s apparent to me that many things around me are just distractions. It’s really nice to unplug from everything and make some things or practice using/sharpening my tools. Those little moments when something clicks feel weirdly fulfilling.

What do you all enjoy doing? Have you found any new passions? What do you like about it?

This is a crop from the original that is in landscape and probably better as a desktop wallpaper, so I know this isn’t high resolution, but I really enjoy this artist’s style and wanted to share.

Wisconsin power outage due to snow (www.wisconsinpublicservice.com)
submitted 11 months ago by loopy@lemm.ee to c/wisconsin@midwest.social

Many power outages across the state due to snowfall causing tree branches to take out power lines. Be sure to report that you have a power outage so the power company is aware of it. WPS phone number is: 800-450-7240, and here is the link to report if you have WE Energies.

It sounds like it may take a few days to fix. Make sure to stay warm and be safe. Run your faucets at a fast drip to help prevent them from freezing.

I think you have the most accurate answer. The “othering” behavior can be seen in essentially any group of people.

Plus, if you read any of the texts of these religions, I have never come across instructions to shun others. I think people have a surface level of belief and then sophomorically apply it to be “more righteous.” They’re really missing the forest for the trees if they elevate themselves above others.

Not the Middle East, but I remember Hinduism having a caste system that does actually rank people, but from information I got, people were generally on the same page about it.

It is tragic that 70 Israeli people died on a Jewish holiday, and also tragic that the Israeli government response has 482 dead and 1600 wounded.

As with most things, there are probably multiple layers of context. But it is just sad that people have to die in the middle of things.

I don’t disagree with what others are saying but I want to add another perspective. Speaking from personal experience, I sought the approval of many girlfriends because I didn’t get approval from my mother. As cliché as it was, after making that realization it became more apparent that I had very little self worth.

If your friend is anything like me in this scenario, it might be better to not focus on the girlfriend situation and focus more on him. What is good at? What makes him unique? And above all, give the reassurance that, “Your worth is not dependent on other people’s opinions.” If I had someone tell me that earlier, it might have saved me some grief. But people cannot forced to be changed, so you can give that advice, and he might continue doing what he is doing. But hopefully it plants the seed for later introspection.

I agree that it should not be normalized, but calling it pathological is a pretty callous description for it. I have had many girlfriends go through my phones and I really had nothing that was upset them, so I didn’t care, but I was always curious. The more I understood it, the checking comes from insecurity that is rooted in trauma. They did it in an effort to protect themselves from being hurt. It was not logical to me because I had given no reason to have them doubt; but the level of hurt and distrust caused them to have extremely careful precautions.

I would definitely have to say my wife. She inspires me to be a better person and my life has been exponentially better since I have known her. Don’t get me wrong, the relationship has been a LOT of work. But every ounce is worth it. And I would not have had the chance to be with her without my dad teaching me a solid work ethic. That with my patience/persistence/determination has gotten me to so many better spaces. I’ve definitely learned to highly value those good people around.

Yeah I wish my doctor would check my prostate using lube, or at least a glove.

Kidding, kidding. My doctor actually said the best practice is no longer to routinely check prostate via digital rectal exam (DRE) because it doesn’t indicate prostate issues any earlier or more accurately than checking a blood PSA level.

I can only imagine that a cervical exam is very uncomfortable. And being that I work in the medical field, I have assisted obtaining cervical swabs. I will say that some providers are pretty focused on getting a good exam or swab and seem to forget that it is a person they are working with. I would definitely mention that it was especially uncomfortable last time and see if they can go slower or anything. If not, maybe get the exam from a different provider, if possible. Some people’s technique just does not include the comfort of the patient.

They talked a lot about buying them, but this where the rubber meets the road. They’ll have to tread carefully.

I hadn’t really heard of the new technique of “manifesting” until now. I read this for an explanation. It does sound very similar to the mindfulness practiced through prayer.

At least from my perspective, the difference being that prayer includes other things like thankfulness, asking for forgiveness for mistakes I have made, etc. I think prayer is a bit more “complete.” I also believe there is a huge advantage to acknowledging that we are simply not in control of everything that happens in our lives. That sounds like a lot of pressure to assume your success is only dependent on your actions.

I am all for people finding ways to healthily better there own lives. If manifesting fills that niche for non-religious people, it seems like a good thing.
