I enjoy making diagrams, and I spent as much time on this as I did because my internet has been out for 2 days and counting and it was an offline tool I already had. Nevertheless, thanks for the link to a new tool to look at

Hi all, new to Lemmy but this seems to be the best community for this that is decently active. Apologies if not!

I got into home servers in my first house a couple years ago, but our stay in that house was unexpectedly brief and everything got put back into boxes. It's time to setup at the new place, and I have many improvements in mind from the first implementation - so while I wait for server parts to arrive, I decided to update the diagram for planning.

In no order, here's a list of lessons I learned from V1:

  • The blade form factor doesn't work for me. I enjoyed getting one and learning about them, but my use cases are small (&quiet) enough that a tower and a small network rack works better.
  • In the quest for automatic home lighting, I shouldn't have gone all-in on smart bulbs rather than switches. There get to be too many in the house, and when a couple start inevitably failing, expensive bulbs and misplaced warranty info are a gigantic pain. So now the bulbs are just for special things like ceiling fans and floor lamps.
  • I need to put more attention on storage. That's what gets used the most, by multiple users, so I will use TrueNAS Scale as my host instead of ESXi. I was not enough of a power user for that to be important to me. The rest of it is mostly for play and doesn't need to be perfect.
  • My media streaming needs are very simple, so I think I may like Jellyfin better than Plex.
  • I need to be 'a little' more lax about security. I don't think my server is realistically likely to be heavily attacked, and when I tried to go all out on best practices, more often than not I just broke things and upset my family users. My server will not have an outside access except via VPN, and my IOT devices will not speak unless spoken to - I think that will be enough.

In particular, I tried so hard last time to have a tagged management VLAN in UniFi and always just broke connectivity between something that required a hard reset. I'm planning to skip that this time but if someone has a pointer to a good setup guide, I could try that again.

Thanks for reading/looking, all comments or suggestions are welcome! I also still need to find more applications I can selfhost so I will be keeping an eye on the community for ideas.

Several things go into string setup and buzz

  • truss rod
  • fret leveling
  • nut
  • neck angle
  • bridge height

If it's a new problem, truss rod is probably the most likely to have changed recently (wood moves), followed by fret wear.

If this guitar has always done this, it could be anything in its setup. Depending on how bad it is, it could even be intentional, the low strings are more likely to buzz and some folks are ok with it on an electric in order to get lower action on all the strings.

It's unlikely to be (only) your nut though - once you fret a string, the nut is removed from the equation, so it can't be the source of 2nd fret buzz (edit: any fretted buzz).

If you want to fully diagnose it rather than guess& check, you'd want a long straight-edge to check the neck straightness, a short straight-edge to check for unlevel frets (you can get a specially designed one called a fret rocker), and any small thing like a credit card to 'measure' your string action height at various frets.

Fixing the truss rod is a good repair to do anyway*, though. Hope this helps!

Hello birders!

I don't have a cool bird pic for you today, but I'm wondering if anyone has some recommendations for good birding festivals you know about? My wife and I are relatively new birders and have greatly enjoyed a couple festivals that we tried out, so I'd love to add the list of ones we should try to make it to.

Would love to hear any mildly related stories as well!

We are even federating content between posts now 🙂 Amazing stuff

My other favorite is the one that I built this year, which I'd been wanting to do for ages and will continue doing as a hobby and maybe eventual retirement activity. It has a ton of mistakes but feels special knowing how it all went together.

My favorite subreddit was r/Luthier, I just started up an equivalent community here, although given current user base I'm guessing all discussion will happen here on guitars until we're able to support more niche users like that.

I have to cheat and say I have two favorites!

In normal terms, I would say my 1965 Airline, because it feels like owning a bit of history to me (it's my only vintage). It might be a bit cliche because of The White Stripes, but Jack White was the first guitar player that really influenced me and gave me the bug, so it means something special to me even if it's a popular/celebritized model.

(Sorry I can't figure out why Lemmy is rotating it, it's not rotated on my phone)

In an attempt to keep activity going, here's what I'm working with for build two - black limba with a claro walnut topper. I have high hopes in particular for this walnut grain when it all gets finished.

In case any other luthiers end up finding their way here, I would love to hear experiences about working with black limba. So far I'm getting a lot more chipping and splitting than my first build, which was maple and sapele.

Thanks for posting it!

I gotta admit I got pretty hyped when she jumped in the ship and it actually took off, and was not just some way to hide a fast travel cut scene.

I'm also digging the vibes of that small town, looks like it could be good open world stuff. Very cautiously optimistic

Welcome! I am looking to re-grow my absolute favorite community here on Lemmy - to kick it off, I'm sharing my first build that I finished in April.

It was a dream come true to finally be able to build up a workshop and try my hands at this. It took 4 months of weekends and the occasional lunch breaks, and I had so much fun, I can't wait to get going on #2 and dive deep into this craft and all it's secrets.

I could just post pics on one of the 'guitars' communities, I'm hoping this community can become a forum for people who really want to discuss the techniques and the process, not just the final product. Please comment or post if you'd like to see the same thing!
