Opinion of one of the admins regarding hexbear, just so you guys know where they stand:
In my view, the hexbear community is actually a positive force on this platform. They are frequently abrasive, but they ultimately have the potential to contribute to what we are building here. They are extremely active and some of them are quite intelligent. But they've also become accustomed to a privileged position on their own walled-in platform, and they need to be reminded that their views are considered ver extreme by the average person.
I'm not from lemm.ee, but I believe that this problem is something the whole fediverse is facing.
Users from instances like hexbear, lemmygrad, exploding heads etc. seem to have some things in common: -Brigading -Trolling -Spreading misinformation/lies about genocides, wars, etc. -Demanding to be heard because of free speech and "tolerance" -When they face resistance, they get aggressive and you better believe that the comments going against their narrative are getting deleted on their instance
They are using lemmy to spread their propaganda and hate. This is exactly how propaganda is effective: spew the same bullshit as often as possible and, because humans tend to believe things to be true that they see or read a lot, radicalize users through it. Of course that doesn't count for every person on that instance but in the end it doesn't matter if a user is an edgy teenager, a radicalized senior or someone with hundred accounts. They are doing damage and the only way to win against them is to not let them into the playground.
Sexual harassment allegations are not "drama". And anyways, the comparison is in the way they apologize and not the damage they have done.
How human of them.
I think it's their counter-argument to:
"If earth is really flat, why do ships disappear behind the oceans horizon?"
"Water mountains"
Alle meine Zuhausis hassen Waldorf Frommer!
How about another approach?
There is no good reason for Lemmyworld to keep on growing to an extent that this kind of overhead is necessary. The idea of Lemmy is decentralization and not creating a new reddit instance. Close your registration, limit your amount of communities and let Lemmy grow in other directions.
I'm surprised the admin gives it so much thought. Just delete "the Donald" and be done with it. Who is going to complain that they don't want to give fascists a platform? That's how you handle them, by not giving them a second thought, all this discussion is already giving them way too much publicity.
I marked my rent payments to my roommate with "Cocaine and Hookers", went on for years but his bank complained one day too.
Funny to imagine if the banks managers were actually using our money for exactly that, but marked as company expenses instead.
