Beg to differ. I work in healthcare and we just got a new manager for our 2 teams (web dev and interfaces) and she has very little technical knowledge. It’s embarrassing the amount of times I’ve literally had to explain the difference between GitHub and VSCode (yes, I know they aren’t even remotely the same thing). Morale is super low. I assume she was hired because she was a “good middle manager,” but I fail to see how that’s possible.

My hot take is that I don’t like cross posting or reposting. I subscribe to communities for the unique content and perspectives that each one provides and to see a user posting the same thing to five different communities for whatever reason (getting upvotes seems to be the only reason) seems silly to me. Let go of the ego a bit and this need for internet points.

The very clear point made here that should have shut all this noise down in the first place is that WPE is not obligated in any way to contribute back to Automattic (private biz) or the WordPress foundation (non profit). Complete shakedown by Matt that should be making all of us think very carefully about the future of the Wordpress platform as a whole. If one guy that runs a private business that also happens to be tied to a nonprofit that runs a widely used platform (yes, that does sound like a mess) decides that he’s not getting his way regarding your business that makes money off of the ecosystem (there are thousands), then he can throw a fit and shake them down too.

The platform isn’t perfect and has its warts, but it does fill a need that works for a lot of use cases. There’s a reason why so much of the web is using it. This drama has been making me give serious thought to completely abandoning the platform and recommending to everyone else that they do the same though.

Exactly. Example: on the Tesla Model 3, many of the panels (such as the rear quarter panel) are glued on instead of bolted/clipped on. So if you graze a stationary object and damage that (it happens), you're on the hook for a very expensive repair since you need a repair shop that specializes in how to deal with that (plus the actual time to do the repair, which is more complicated). Update the designs to make them more repair friendly and the cost of ownership comes way down.

I genuinely dislike TikTok (might be just old-man-shaking-his-fists-at-the-sky syndrome), but a complete ban on an app like that seems uninformed and quite the overreach. I think banning it on government devices is a good move, and I also think having everyone make informed decisions on who they give their personal information to is paramount (in this case, tin foil hat or no, you’re likely giving it to the CCP), but this seems like a clear case of a bunch of old timers making a pretty uninformed decision based on knee-jerk reactions to public opinion.

I sure am glad we get these large corporations so much in the way of legislation, relaxed regulation, and financial incentives. Surely these will guarantee loads of FUTURE hiring when it will all start trickling down.

Auto makers "slashing prices." With perhaps one or 2 small exceptions, can you actually go out and buy an EV for under 40K in the US? Didn't think so. Seems to be a whole lotta confusion about "demand" and the manufacturers actually making an electric car that normal people can afford.

The pandemic handed us all a super easy win on doing something about climate change by forcing a large chunk of us to (temporarily, it seems) stop sitting in our cars twice a day. Instant reduction in the amount of CO2 we're producing. It's not 100% of the solution, but it's not nothing, and a year in, most of us had adapted just fine (I'd argue, most who could WFH, prospered, seeing a lot more benefit than negative).

But nah - let's get back in our cars, waste time at the beginning and end of every day, spend more money on coffees and lunch, and breathe in the cubicle goodness because, fuck it - that's the way we've always done it.
