I have had a lot success I think, I got into it from guided meditations posted by the Buddhist Society of Western Australia. It's common that people starting out say they aren't 'doing it right'.

If you are having trouble staying mindful of your breath or whatever it just means your mind is restless, you are still doing it right. Your posture, energy, focus and such is never perfect. When doing mindfulness meditation just note whatever comes up, as you do it more it becomes easier to view what's happening and your mind will relax more.

I also enjoy Buddhist 'metta' meditation, focusing on the feeling of loving-kindness. There is a physical feeling associated with love, being able to generate the feeling and focus on it in meditation is rewarding.

I have access to 3d printers at my work, I wonder if they would say anything if I printed some pieces, it's my constitutional right isn't it? We can use them for personal projects, they never said anything about weapons.

AP News: UnitedHealth Group CEO steps down as company lowers, then withdraws financial outlook for 2025 luigi-dance

It has been a punishing period for UnitedHealth, starting in December when executive Brian Thompson was targeted outside of a New York City hotel and killed. While unrelated to the financial operations of the $340 billion healthcare giant, its shares have tumbled severely since the attack.

UnitedHealth cut its 2025 forecast last month following its first quarterly earnings miss in more than a decade. On Tuesday the company withdrew that financial forecast entirely, saying that medical costs from new Medicare Advantage members were higher than expected.

Shares of UnitedHealth, which have plummeted 38% since the deadly Dec. 4 ambush of Thompson in midtown Manhattan, fell more than 16% Tuesday to levels last seen almost five years ago.

Other big insurers tumbled as well, with Elevance, Humana and Cigna falling between 4% and 7%.

There are many factors that have caused companies to lose value in the last few months, I am curious where UHC would be without this killing though. It's interesting that they saw their first quarterly earnings miss in over ten years. It's hard not to assume that Thompson's death contributed to the company's current issues directly.

Could be they just wanted to mention they were married so as not to give you the wrong impression? And a woman telling her partner someone is nice to them at work doesn't seem too weird, a lot of people aren't as nice as you probably.

That is silly. All hexbears are remarkably good-looking and I refuse to believe otherwise.

Excuse for what? What would it have accomplished if I voted then?

[–] tocopherol@hexbear.net 44 points 6 days ago (5 children)

I live in a state where no vote I could have done would make a difference.

religious fundies here want the same thing they do

What do you mean by this? Religious fundamentalists in the US are more likely to be Zionists, they want to destroy Palestine, or are you talking about the 'Israeli' fundamentalists?

And if you did protest vote or not vote at all I hold you equal as those who voted MAGA

Nazis are the same as those who don't want to vote for Nazis, interesting.

We had a school like that in my district in the US, students weren't sent temporarily though, they would spend a year or more there if they were a 'trouble student' at the regular school. None of us growing up thought there was anything weird about that.

SPOILERS for Star Trek Enterprise potentially

I was noticing it was tough for me to get into shows that started after the 2000s, and talking to someone I mused about how it must be because of 9/11. I was watching Enterprise at the time, on the season just before 2001, and sure enough, the episodes after 9/11 had a complete shift in tone, the show becoming basically 24, sci-fi War on Terror immediately. It's like a parody of 'if Starfleet had to make the hard choices to make America safe from space Al Qaeda' or something. Overall the show is better than I was expecting though, still got me hooked on the trekness.

It was clear there was a cultural shift after 9/11, especially in the mainstream US media. It was interesting to be able to see it so distinctly in a show that went from the pre- to post- era. Does anyone else have any good examples of that happening in shows that spanned that shift?

I have a friend who is essentially communist, we debate all sorts of things and he generally agrees we need to get rid of capitalism. However he is assured that there is no way to determine the value of commodities as effectively as the market can through supply and demand (aside from his argument that soon an AI super-intelligence can save us without the market incentives). I try to point out that the market as it is isn't efficient and creates massive waste, pointing to various ways that our system generates waste due to capitalism, and he agrees it is extremely inefficient but still the best we can do right now.

I have read a lot more theory about resistance to capitalism, insurgency, organization and the like but not as much about the specific economics of a communist society once we move past capitalism. Where would be a good place to start? Should I just quote Das Kapital to him?

Henry is a proud father of 11, but he didn't become a father until 2009, around at least 110 years into his life. He long had aspirations of a family and had a few dates in the 1980s which ended poorly after he bit off his dates tail. He hatched sometime in the 1890s, making him the oldest known tuatara alive today, and holds the record for longest time in captivity at 46 years (he is a political prisoner due to his violent agitation in favor of Māori self-determination).

He is held along with Mildred, the mother of his children, and several other tuataras at the Queens Park animal reserve in Invercargill, New Zealand. He and his associates have never been formally charged with a crime.

A fun lizard native to northeastern Africa and parts of the Middle East. The homie pictured here is a male during breeding season. They turn a blue color to attract mates, at other seasons being a sandy brown. Female individuals are brown year-round (sneaky sneaky).

"The revolution can't survive if the revolutionary is killed. So the revolutionary has to be wise to avoid the killing fields. Not for the sake that he wants to live, but that the revolution may live and thrive, so revolutionaries have to be wise. Not only courageous, but wise."

This gets me so GAHDANG HYPED

We should have a counter on our profiles that says how many times we've been called a Chinese or Russian bot.

Most recently while posting on my lemmy account I was called this, by a Trump fan, because I mentioned Biden deporting more people than Trump, therefore I was a Russian trying to get Biden elected?? That was a new twist on it biden-supervised

What are you gonna have? Do we even need to eat breakfast? I'm trying to figure out things quick to make that don't have a ton of sugar and aren't egg based. Any ideas?
