For this Friday Movie Night, first up is The Spirit of the Beehive (1973), a Spanish slice-of-life set in 1940, following the devastation of the Spanish Civil War. A child sees the movie Frankenstein (1931) and begins to imagine that the monster is lurking around, just out of sight. Some surrealism, spookiness, and childlike wonder ensue as the mystery centers upon a derelict barn. This is the best-known and best-regarded film of Spanish auteur Victor Erice, who is otherwise best-known for El Sur (1983) and Close Your Eyes (2023), neither of whichwe have yet watched.

After that is F1 (2025), the blockbuster racecar-driving saga starring Brad Pitt as a washed-up former star who gets one last one last chance to get back in the driver’s seat and win some cash and glory. Cars go fast. Probably some crashes, too. Director Joseph Kosinski previously ddi Top Gun: Maverick (2022), and this fills pretty much the same niche as that film, but with cars. Reviews are good, and an HD rip just appeared, so we’ll give it a shot.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:

Be there, comrades!

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is Taste of Cherry (1997). A depressed Iranian man on the verge of suicide tries to find someone to bury him after he dies. He meets various people, and, in his adventures, he manages to find reason to live, and his newfound peers bring him back from the brink. A quiet movie, but generally considered a feel-good piece. Director is renowned auteur Abbas Kiarostami, whose Where Is the Friend’s House? (1987) and Close-Up (1990) we previously watched. Considered one of the best films of the 1990s and one of the best Iranian films of all time. Currently ranked #131 on the Letterboxd Top 250.

After that is Ballerina (2025), a spinoff of the John Wick series, this time focusing on a lady assassin played by Ana de Armas. During the events of John Wick 3, she is just starting her training to be a total badass so that she can avenge her father’s death. Expect a whole lot of martial arts and gunfights, with the series’ usually stylish flourishes. Director Len Wiseman is better-known for, uhh, Underworld (2003) and Live Free or Die Hard (2007). Good reviews for this, so let’s give it a whirl.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Ace Attorney (2012), Takashi Miike’s adaptation of famed lawyer video game Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (2001). It is a live-action cartoon about a lawyer solving various cases in over-the-top fashion, assisted by a girl who can channel dead people. We have already watched a few Miike films, including Ichi the Killer (2001), Happiness of the Katakuris (2005), Yakuza (2007), and 13 Assassins (2010). The reviews are pretty good for this one, so let’s check it out.

After that is 13 Going on 30 (2004), a comedy about a 13-year-old girl who wishes she could hide from the world until she turned 30. The power of magic then transports her into the body of a cool 30-year-old (Jennifer Garner). At first, she’s excited, but what if adult life isn’t as great as it seems? Uh-oh. Director Gary Winick seemed to specialize in these sorts of teen-girl-oriented movies, such as Bride Wars (2009) and Letters to Juliet (2010). This film is really popular on Letterboxd, some’ll give it a whirl.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is The Truth (1960), a French courtroom drama about a young woman put on trial, accused of murdering her lover. Director is Henri-Georges Clouzot, who is better-known as the guy behind The Wages of Fear (1953) and Les Diaboliques (1955); surprisingly, we have never watched any of his films. This is supposed to be one of his best, and one of the classics of 60s French cinema, so let’s check it out.

After that is Problemista (2023), an absurdist comedy featuring a poor Salvadoran toy designer in NYC who has no choice but to take up work with an eccentric artist (Tilda Swinton) in a desperate bid to extend his work visa. Satire of the US immigration system follows from there, along with surreal fantasy touches. This is the debt feature of director Julio Torres. Great reviews for this, so we’ll give it a whirl.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985), the sequel to Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), and the series that made Gundam into a national phenomenon. Expect a whole lot of robots fighting each other and war melodrama resulting thereof, as a task force assigned to clean up the remnants of an evil empire turns evil itself. Still considered one of the best Gundam series of them all. Episodes 31 through 36 tonight.

After that is The Tower (2018), an English-language Norwegian stop-motion animated feature that follows a Palestinian girl’s struggle in a Lebanese refugee camp as she discovers the multi-generational history of her family’s troubles under occupation and then exile. The plot is realized with beautiful hand-crafted puppets and props. This is the only notable work to date of director Mats Grorud. This film received great reviews after its debut at Cannes, so let’s check it out.

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Funeral Parade of Roses (1969), an LGBT-themed surrealist piece about the owner of a gay bar in 1960s Tokyo who enters into a romance with one of the trans prostitutes there, bringing the two into conflict with the bar’s madam. Drama ensues, along with a bunch of documentary-style interviews with the bar’s patrons. Director is Toshio Matsumoto, who also the did the face-replacement thriller The Fact of Another (1966), which we previously watched. This is considered one of the best Japanese films of all time; it is currently ranked #128 on the Letterboxd Top 250.

After that is First Cow (2019), a western set in 1820s Oregon, following a lone travelling cook and his new buddy, a Chinese immigrant, as they plot to steal milk from the only cow in the territory. Unfortunately for them, the cow belongs to the local landlord. Time for some class warfare. Director is Kelly Reichardt, who is otherwise best-known for the missing-dog drama Wendy & Lucy (2008), which we have not yet watched. Great reviews for this, so let’s check it out.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is La Notte (1961), one of the most acclaimed works of one of Italy’s most renowned directors, Michaelangelo Antonioni, whose L’Avventura (1960) and The Passenger (1975) we previously watched. A bourgeois Italian married couple have grown so alienated and detached that their relationship is nothing more than a serious of passionless functions; the film follows one day in their life, where they cheat on each other and ruminate on the faults of their marriage. Will they work their problems out? I guess we’ll discover that for ourselves. This is considered one of the best Italian films of all time, and it is currently ranked #166 on the Letterboxd Top 250.

After that is Robocop 2 (1990), the sequel to the classic sci-fi satire Robocop (1987), which we previously watched. Paul Verhoeven was not involved; Irvin Kershner, George Lucas’s mentor and director of The Empire Strikes Back (1980), takes the director’s chair this time around. The megacorp that created Robocop has managed to revive him, because they need him to eliminate a drug-addled cult taking over the streets of the dystopian future-city. But uh-oh, the cult leader has himself become the subject test for a new, evil Robocop model, and the two robots are destined to clash. Who will win? I bet the good guys do, but there will be a whole lot of blood, gore, and explosions along the way. This film has undergone something of a reevaluation in recent years, so let’s see it’it’s good.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Detective Chinatown 1900 (2025), the fourth installment in one of China’s most successful homegrown film series to date. This one is a prequel, being set in the year 1900 in San Francisco, starring the ancestors of the protagonists from the first three films. Cross-cultural hilarity ensues. Director Chen Sicheng returns once again. Currently the 14th-highest-grossing film of all time at the Chinese box office.

After that is Super (2010) ,James Gunn’s second feature following Slither (2006), and his first outing into the superhero genre, which has dominated his career since. A man’s wife becomes indebted toa drug dealer, and so he decides to become a superhero and beat up dudes until she is free. A lot of sex and violence follow, mostly in dark-comedic fashion. This was originally released unrated and so did not receive a wide theatrical release, though it later found a cult following on home media. Gunn has a good track record, so we’ll give it a shot.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Day for Night (1973), one of the most acclaimed films of one of the most renowned auteurs of French cinema, Francois Truffaut; surprisingly, we have never watched any of his work on the ;tube. That changes tonight. This film is a comedy-drama about a stressed-out director trying to navigate various crises, both large and small, as he tries to finish his latest film. Will we succeed, or will the pressure drive him to madness? I guess we’ll find out.

After that is Weapons (2025), the new blockbuster horror feature from Zach Cregger, the guy behind Barbarian (2022), which we previously watched. All the kids in a quiet suburban town, except for one, suddenly disappear, and the grown-ups have to figure out what happened. I bet there’s some spooky stuff behind this mystery. Critics are raving about this one, and a good quality camrip just appeared, so let’s give it a whirl.

Episodes 25 through 30 tonight.

After that is A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1959), a stop-motion adaptation of Shakespeare’s play of the same name, from renowned Czech animator Jiri Trnka; this is generally considered his magnum opus, and one of the best animated films from the Eastern Bloc. Behold as a trio of Athenian couples venture into the land of fairies, where the mischievous Puck distributes a love potion that causes all kinds of romantic entanglements. Everyone is a puppet animal in this version, and the effects look cool, so let’s check it out.

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Funny Girl (1968), the blockbuster musical that made Barbra Streisand a household name. Babs stars in an embellished biography of 1930s comedian Fanny Brice, following her rise and fall in the ruthless world of showbiz, and her strained romance with a gambler (Omar Sharif). This has a really high rating on Letterboxd, so we’ll give it a whirl. Director is William Wyler, who specialized in these sorts of big-studio features, such as Roman Holiday (1953) and Ben-Hur (1959); we previously watched his lesbian drama The Children’s Hour (1961), period drama The Heiress (1949), and epic western The Big Country (1958).

After that is Children of Heaven (1997), an Iranian children’s drama about a boy who borrows his sister’s shoes, and then loses them, forcing him to scour his hometown in search of the shoes, and, failing that, to get a new pair of shoes. Where the hell are the god damn shoes? I guess we’ll find out. This is the best-known and best-regarded film of director Majid Majidi, and is considered one of the best Iranian films of all time. Currently ranked #187 on the IMDb [Top 250)(https://www.imdb.com/chart/top/).

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is After Life (1998), a Japanese fantasy/drama from renowned auteur Hirokau Koreeda, whose Shoplifters (2018), Nobody Knows (2004), Monster (2023), and Broker (2022) we have previously watched. In this one, a group of counselors interviews some people who recently died, trying to narrow their most cherished memories down to one, which they will then get to keep for the rest of eternity. This is considered one of the best Japanese films of the 1990s, so let’s give it a whirl.

After that is Frenzy (1972), often considered the last great work of the master himself, Alfred Hitchcock. It is a British crime thriller about a serial killer who has been targeting women around London; an average Joe finds himself suspected by the ;olice of being the killer when his ex-wife becomes the sicko’s latest victim, and he goes on the run to evade the law and clear his name. This is the only Hitchcock film that currently carries an R rating from the MPA, and is often considered the darkest of his filmography. Nevertheless, it still contains his trademark black humor.
