For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Delicatessen, a surreal dystopian French black-comedy-satire about a post-apocalyptic city in which meat is a rare luxury, eagerly sought by the surviving inheritors of the ruined world. Amidst this carnist hellscape, a man falls in love with a butcher’s daughter, and is manipulated by her family into helping out the family business. This is considered one of the best films of director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who is best-known for Amelie (2001) and Alien Resurrection (1997). Looks cool; let’s watch.

Next is How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), a screwball rom-com starring Kate Hudson as a journalist who bets that she can drive off any man within ten days, and Matthew McConaughey as a womanizer who bets that he can seduce any woman within ten days. Hilarity ensues. Surely these two won’t stand each other. For some reason, this movie is really popular on Letterboxd; 6th most popular film of 2003 there? Well, okay, we’ll check it out. Director Donald Petrie is otherwise best-known for, uhh, Miss Congeniality (2000) and Richie Rich (1994).

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:

Be there, comrades!

First up is Election 2 (2006), the better-reviewed sequel to Election (2005), which we watched last week. Lok, the guy who won election to be chairman of his gang in the first film, now has to face off against his godsons, who have begun to challenge his authority. Conflict ensues. This is one of the best-regarded films of director Johnnie To, who did both the first film, as well as Exiled (2006), both of which we previously watched.

After that is Gladiator II (2024), the sequel to the Best Picture Oscar-winning Gladiator (2000). Ridley Scott returns to direct this tale of another guy (Paul Mescal) in ancient Rome who has to stab his way through a series of opponents to get a crack at killing an evil emperor. Expect a whole lot of gore and limb-choppy stuff. An HD rip has just appeared, so let’s watch.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Nothing but a Man (1964), a neorealist drama about a working-class African American man who tries to from a union with his fellow railroad workers; unfortunately for him, The Man is determined to prevent that from happening. To make matters worse, his burgeoning romance with a schoolteacher is impeded by racist assholes. God Damn America: The Movie. This movie was lost for a few decades before being rediscovered and rereleased, being seen now as one of the best examples of neorealism in 1960s American cinema. It is the best-known and best-regarded film of director Michael Roemer.

Next up is El Infierno (2010), a Mexican black comedy about a man deported from the US back to Mexico, who struggles to find work except in the seedy world of drug cartels. Hilarity and much violence ensue as he goes further and further into the narco business, attracting fame, fortune, and enemies along the way. This is the best-known and best-reviewed work to date of director Luis Estrada, and one of the highest-rated Mexican movies on Letterboxd.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we’re continuing The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2006), the smash-hit anime about the wacky adventures of an eccentric, exuberant schoolgirl and her not-quite-as-boisterous friends. Episodes 25 through 28 tonight.

After that is The Peasants (2023), a Polish animated feature directed by British duo Hugh and DK Welchman, who are best-known for Van Gogh biopic Loving Vincent (2017), which we previously watched. A girl in 19th-century Poland is forced to marry a much older, richer kulak. Surprise, surprise, he sucks, and so do the villagers around her, who are jealous of her upward mobility. I’m sure this will all end happily. God Damn Poland: The Movie. The whole thing looks like a watercolor painting, and reviews are excellent, so let’s give it a whirl.

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Jigarthanda (2014), an Indian action-comedy about a filmmaker who surreptitiously follows a gangster around to make a documentary about organized crime. Unfortunately for him, the gang catches him, and he is quickly drawn into the violent escapades of ruthless hoodlums as they suspect him of being a mole. This film, along with its sequel, is the best-regarded work of director Karthik Subbaraj, and is one of the highest-rated Indian films on Letterboxd. Let’s check it out.

After that is Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (2024), the second feature-length film starring a claymated cheese-obsessed British man and his hyper-intelligent dog. This time, Wallace’s inventions go a bit too far when he creates a robotic gnome that seems to have a sinister mind of its own. Hilarity ensues. For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is Election (2005), a Hong Kong triad thriller about a gangster who loses an election to become the head of his gang, after which point he tries to acquire the baton Macguffin that symbolizes the boss’s authority. A struggle ensues between the gang’s rival factions. This is considered one of the best films of director Johnnie To Kei-Fung, and it has an even more highly-regarded sequel, which we will watch soon enough.

After that is Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2023), the much-anticipated sequel to Sonic 1 & 2, featuring the debut of Sonic’s palette-swapped edgelord rival, Shadow the Hedgehog. Jim Carrey returns once again as Robotnik. Reviews are better than for the first two. Good enough for me. A decent-quality camrip has just appeared, so this is as good a time as any to watch it.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Marat/Sade (1967), a British postmodernist theatre-satire-musical-black-comedy-psych-horror-drama about a group of asylum inmates in post-revolutionary Napoleonic France who, under the leadership of the Marquis de Sade (the guy who wrote 120 Days of Sodom [1785]), decide to dramatize the 1793 assassination of radical agitator Jean-Paul Marat. Chaos ensues as the wardens and inmates battle over the play’s ideological content. It is based on the play of the same name by Peter Weiss, and considered the best film of director Peter Brooks, who is otherwise known for Lord of the Flies (1963). Looks cool; let’s watch.

Next up is La Ceremonie (1995), a French thriller about a new maid for a bougie family in a country mansion. They treat her with casual disdain. She meets a post-office clerk who encourages her to rebel against them; resentment builds, and class warfare heats up, as the two women join forces. This is one of the best-regarded films of French auteur Claude Chabrol, whose filmography we have not otherwise touched. Bong Joon-ho cited this film as an influence on Parasite (2019). For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is Silvestre (1981), a Portuguese fairy tale about a girl who disguises herself as a male knight to seek her missing father, who disappeared after a violent visit to their home by a duplicitous drifter who left with his hand severed. Apparently there’s some magic and dragons in this somewhere, too. I guess we’ll find out. The entire film has an impressionistic, painting-like aesthetic, which looks cool. The director is renowned auteur Joao Cesar Monteiro; this is considered one of his best works. This will be the first Portuguese movie we have watched on Hextube.

After that is Christmas in Connecticut (1945), a screwball rom-com starring Barbara Stanwyck as a newspaper columnist who writes about her idyllic married life on a farm, which would be all well and good, except that she is actually a single, childless, city mouse. A war hero arranges with her publisher to live on her farm for a couple of days, and so she moves to a real farm to pretend she actually does live the lifestyle about which she writes. Hilarity ensues. And maybe romance? Who knows. Just a comfy li’l classic Christmas movie. This is the best-known and best-regarded film of director Peter Godfrey.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Santa Claus: The Movie (1985), a fantasy holiday story telling the origin of Santa (played by Dudley Moore) as he progresses from his humble roots as a woodsman to his destiny as the supreme toy deliverer. and his springing into action to stop the schemes of an evil capitalist toymaker and a turncoat elf. A lot of nice-looking practical effects and sets here. This was a bomb at the time of its release, but has now achieved a cult following. Director is Jeannot Szwarc, who is otherwise known for, uhh, Jaws 2 (1978) and Supergirl (1984).

After that is Merry Christmas Mr. Bean (1992), the Christmas episode of the famed Mr. Bean series, in which he gets up to his usual slapstick antics. We have, surprisingly, never watched any Bean on Hextube. That changes tonight.

Last is Symbol (2009), a surreal Japanese slapstick comedy about a man who wakes up in an empty, featureless room and has to press the correct buttons to get what he wants. Meanwhile, a Mexican luchador prepares for a title bout against his rival. These two plots sound like they have nothing to do with each other, but I assume they will intersect at some point. Director is Hitoshi Matsumoto, the guy behind the superhero parody Big Man Japan (2007). Get ready for weirdness.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is The Legend of 1900 (1998), a magical-realist melodrama about a pianist (Tim Roth) who was born on a big cruise ship and has never left it. He hears about the outer world only as a legend, refusing ever to go ashore, even when the boat is threatened with destruction. Will he go down with the ship? I guess we’ll find out. Director is Giuseppe Tornatore, the Italian auteur working here in his English-language debut; he is better-known for the similarly-whimsical Cinema Paradiso (1988). Currently ranked #240 on IMDB’s Top 250 English-language films of all time.

Next up is Daisies (1966), a Czech surrealist comedy about a pair of ladies who go on a chaotic rampage against conformity. They plan and execute a series of elaborate pranks on the stuffy suits around them in an attempt to prove that they’re true sickos. Hilarity ensues. This is considered the magnum opus of director Vera Chytilova, who is not known for much else; she is a one-hit wonder. One of the highest-rated Czech films on Letterboxd.
