If Linus were to visit Mount Everest, he'd reach base camp, spend the next day criticizing the sherpas, calling them foolish for taking the well-established path, and insisting that a direct line to the summit is obviously the best option.

Bazite has solid onboarding, hardware support (including Nvidia and AMD), and, dare I say, even printer support. All things he complains about in this video. But then again, what do I know? I'm just a sherpa.

This release took some time, but it's worth it! VoxeLibre is back on track with development.

Minecarts are reworked and you can put them back on track; a new projectile system will make combat and adventure smoother; new original weapons (spears and hammers!) with unique functions will aid you there; and then you can enjoy a nice show of new fireworks on an improved sky... All the while farming mobs and plants, utilizing the improvements to their systems! And this is not the end...

Our migration from SVN to GIT has already started! You can now access our new repositories on http://a-lec.org/ 😍 :

The repos are now open! Please feel free to play around with them, ask questions, report feedback, etc.

To avoid confusion, please keep in mind the following TODOs:

  • Migrate existing assets (tracks, driver liveries, cars) to their own repositories.
    • This can be done at a slower pace, since we can only migrate assets whose licensing is clear and fully free (as in freedom).
    • Non-free assets should be ideally hosted elsewhere.
    • Illegal assets (e.g.: those under proprietary licenses and/or violating intellectual property, such as lancer09-wr) will not be migrated.
  • Migrate existing tickets/issues from SVN to https://forge.a-lec.org/speed-dreams/.
  • Make some suggested improvements to the in-game download manager.
    • "Download all" button.
    • Filter by category (car category, track type, robot type) and quality (pre-alpha, alpha, beta, production).

Hi folks,

I got a new Xbox Series X Controller (Model 1914). I had Xbox One controller before.

With xpadneo installed I had basically no problems running my xbox one controller. It connected via BT with no issues and workes in games really well wired and wireless.

The new controller on the other hand, works really well via cable, but does not connect via BT. I can find it, I can pair it, but I cannot connect to it.

xpadneo readme says Series X needs a BT stick with BLE so I bought one, but that did not solve the problem (I'm not sure if BLE needs to be activated or how to do it rn).

Hello gamers,

I have some games which I want to give away after I finally understood that I'm more of a hoarder than a gamer. I wish I realized it earler then I could give away some cooler games.

The games are

  • The Coma: Recut
  • Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition
  • Riot: Civil Unrest
  • Coromon

Ping me if you want them and I'll DM you. Once you have added the key, post in the group that you've used the key.

Merry Christmas everyone ⛄

2 months old article, but the video explains well what and how Umu launcher works.

Essentially I think it replaces Steam's runtime environment, by doing kinda what this runtime does, but for all games (even non-steam ones). It has a database to match the games, so that umu knows what scripts to run the game (like setting environment variables, installing dependencies etc.).

Lutris now (if I understood well) uses umu when you choose the proton runner. You can enable it in Heroic launcher as well. You can also run umu "bare" through command line, by creating the wine prefix, feeding it a name to match it to the database and let it do its work (I think this is presented at around 01:30:00 mark). As time passes, more programs seem to adopt it.

It's a ~40mins presentation which starts about after the first hour in the video. Took me really long to understand how this works, hope it will help others.😅

A few months ago I switched from Windows 10 to Linux Mint. I'm mostly able to play games but there are some annoyances. I'm hoping an expert can help identify these issues.

Summary of issues

  1. Shortcuts to steam and to individual games is wonky
  2. Having trouble using different proton versions and trying different ones causes a situation where I have to reboot to use steam
  3. Something I don't understand about remounting disks and the interaction with steam on how it references it's library.

Detail

  1. First of all, When I installed steam, it added a link under Menu->Games->Steam. This link doesn't work. It appears to launch but then the screen just blinks every once in a while. I have to end up killing steam from the process monitor. If I open a terminal and type "steam", and then run games from the steam UI window, they mostly run ok. Sometimes I am able to run a game by clicking the link that gets added to Menu->Games. This actually opens the steam UI (if it was closed) and launches the game.

  2. Second, there are a few games that don't work very well, especially ones that play videos. For these I've tried Proton Experimental. This sometimes works, but sometimes games get stuck on some percentage of "processing vulcan shaders". I try to kill steam and restart but the only thing that works is a full reboot. So when I kill steam there is still stuff floating around that needs to be ended but I'm not sure how to identify it. BTW I also tried installing Proton GE but that seemed to hose everything and I had to remove it.

  3. The third thing is that I don't exactly know how the library is associated with a drive. I have a 2nd drive that I can't get to mount automatically. It recently had a corruption and I went into the Disks utility and repaired it. While there I went to the "Edit Mount Options" and saw a toggle for "User Session Defaults". I unchecked this and rebooted. The drive mounted with no issue, which is great. Unfortunately, when I started Steam, it did not know the drive anymore and any game that I had installed only said "Install". So I went to the steam settings and re-added the drive for the steam library. The games reappeared as installed, but then I got errors that cloud sync had failed and the games wouldn't run. So I'm guessing there is some drive id associated with the installs, and the "User Session Defaults" causes the drive to have a different id or something? Or possibly I set the steam library base directory to the wrong value. I eventually changed the mount options and put back "User Session Defaults". So the games work again but the drive doesn't mount on startup again.

Steam launch issue (lemmy.world)
submitted 2 weeks ago by Cheems@lemmy.world to c/linux_gaming@lemmy.ml

I just built a new PC and decided to use Linux. Initially when I built it my ssd was going to take a long time to come in, weeks after the rest of the parts. So I installed fedora onto an external SSD that I had and everything was great.

Thursday my new internal SSD came in and so I installed fedora onto it and migrated the files I wanted to keep to my new one. After installing steam I'm getting errors when it launches.

There are several versions, proton hot fix, steam, runtime 1.0 scout, runtime 2.0 soldier, runtime 3.0 sniper.

No matter which one I launch this time around I get "an error occurred while launching this game: invalid game configuration"

Usually I launch it, the icon pops up and goes away several times, I end the process, launch it again and it gives me the aforementioned error.

It didn't do that till I installed the new SSD.

If you zoom in you can clearly see the Steam delivery girl using Windows 11 theme for KDE Plasma. It is so awesome that Valve artists pay attention even to the smallest details!

I'm still on windows, and I periodically check if it's time to switch to Linux on my gaming PC. My only requirements are that I should be able to enable adaptive sync without touching the terminal or needing to turn off my second monitor. Anyone with Nvidia hardware switch recently?

so i just installed lethal company (with mods) and chained together. and in both games i got a boost from 40FPS to over 100FPS! so i am curios what the reason may be?

both games seem to be not too optimised, also in chained together i get 20FPS in DX12 mode but ~110 in DX11 so whats up with that?

also lethal company finally uses more than 40% of my gpu and cpu now, for some reason? i assume this plays part in the performance jump.

Laptop: Lenovo Legion 5-15ACH6A
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H
GPU: AMD Radeon 6600m
Proton: GE-Proton9-10
Distro: Arch (btw)

I was able to successfully install and play zenless zone zero through steam. I installed the game launcher onto my OS drive but the game itself to a seperate Linux drive. I was able to play and install updates for a long time until yesterday. There was a new update out I tried to install it but it said I didn't have enough space. I have 300gigs available on the drive its installed to so I thought for some reason it's trying to install it to the OS drive. I wasn't sure how to fix that so I figured I'd just uninstall it and reinstall it to my second drive. But now when I go to install it, it says my drive doesnt have enough space. I'm not sure why it would say that when I have 300 gigs available. I also tried re installing the launcher onto the drive that I want to install the game on, but it won't install to a drive that isn't C: not sure what I can do now.

EDIT: I tried every solution suggested below, nothing worked. I eventually gave up and connected an external drive that's NTFS and the game installed to that. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. EDIT 2: after thinking about this I remembered that when I first installed ZZZ, I didn't have my drive auto-mounting on boot. I guess after making that change the launcher didn't like my drive or something

Pretty exciting times ahead as Valve might finally release SteamOS to more hardware. This amount of Linux desktop coverage would be unimaginable few years ago.

Just wanted to say I made the switch yesterday from Windows 11 to Fedora Linux, no dual booting. It took multiple installs though because the first two times I followed old instructions for installing the Nvidia drivers. The third time I found out that I can just install them through the software center when third party repositories are enabled and that worked like a breeze.

And I have to say it's a really good thing that the installer for Fedora is getting an overhaul soon because Anaconda is horribly confusing in its UX.

Edit: just wanted to add a hyfetch screenshot:

So for the past little while I've had a Pi 4 hooked up to my TV as a Kodi box running OSMC, which has been okay I guess. Having recently built a new PC, my old Ryzen 3600/GTX-1080 box is freed up, so I'm thinking of replacing that Pi with something that can also run Steam.

I'm completely at a loss for what system to run for a living room couch/TV experience. Kodi...could be better, OSMC doesn't have a desktop and won't launch just a normal web browser, it uses Kodi as its only UI and it's just not fully good enough.

I'm also not sure if Steam Big Picture Mode is capable of being a media center. Like, can it play movies from there? My experience with Steam's Big Picture Mode is it runs like microwaved shit anyway, feels as responsive as the average dogwood.

I want to be able to get to my collection of movies on my NAS, play Steam games, and do some web browser tasks like watch Youtube and that kind of thing. I just don't do the streaming services, I don't need Huflix or NetMax or whatever.
