I often use a commercial VPN service, which I suspect is not rare among Lemmy users. Most of the time, I'm able to post to lemmy.world, but on occasion I am not. The default web UI provides zero feedback, just a spinning submit button forever, but if I look in the browser dev tools, I can see it's being blocked.

I understand that some limitations are necessary to prevent spam and other abuse, however this is a very blunt instrument. The fact that I have a 10 month old account with consistent activity should outweigh any IP address reputation issues.

Perhaps the VPN limitations could be narrowed in scope to cover only account creation and posts from young accounts.

When trying to post this news article on the Egypt Community, after clicking the create button it keeps loading forever.

Client used: official website.

is the issue unique to this community: yes.

Side note: If possible, appoint a new moderator or, if there isn't enough manpower, consider adding me. This way, the community can continue to thrive on Lemmy instead of remaining dormant.

Edit 1: also if possible do the same for ex-egypt community.

I understand it is odd to request multiple communities at once, but many of my local communities are moderated by inactive users. I completely understand if I can only request one or two at a time, so I've listed them in order of importance:

!philadelphia@lemmy.world (only mod has been inactive for 9 months)

!eagles@lemmy.word (modded by an account that has been inactive for 5 mos plus an inactive bot)

!phillies@lemmy.world (same as /c/eagles plus another account that has been inactive for 7 mos)

!MLB@lemmy.world (this one is random, but it is pretty inactive and I've just started posting to it. Same mod as /c/eagles and /c/phillies)

The community !asexual@lemmy.world has one mod who appears to be inactive for about 8 months. I am asking to be instated as a mod, as I am an active member of that community.

Banned by an admin? (lemmy.world)
submitted 3 months ago by PugJesus@lemmy.world to c/support@lemmy.world

My Kbin account was banned by an admin for sending unusual activity? Does anyone have any insight on what that means?

Hi,

I normally post from an account on the sh.itjust.works instance and recently noticed that posts and comments to and from lemmy.world are getting delayed by a few hours.

I made this post (https://sh.itjust.works/post/17275496) to discuss on that instance, but you might not be able to see the comments over there, including responses from the admins, if you're using a .world account.

Full disclosure, I am not on the admin team over there, but based on their responses it sounds like something might be going on with the lemmy.world side.

Just wanted to bring it to your attention.

Thanks

I’m unable to interact with the Formula1 community on Lemmy. I’ve messaged the mods who have told me I’m not banned.

Is there a way to understand what’s happening?

I got a message that my post was "anti derechos humanos" (anti human rights). That is crazy, do not understand. Is this a common mistake or what? I do not even remember a post with the human rights subject.

I noticed that the mod doesn't seem to be very active there !homeassistant@lemmy.world
I'd be happy to take it on.

Deleted by creator (lemmy.world)

Is there anyway to remove deleted by creator for every post I delete? Its a pain in the ass to see these in between posts that I don't delete.

!star_wars@lemmy.world has one mod, !@finger@lemmy.world, who hasn't posted in 7 months. I post to the community and request to be modded to give it an active mod.

Thanks, I know you all are probably busy with other fires at the moment.

I don't know the specifics behind why the communities were (re-)removed but the reasons given in the modlog seem vague enough to apply to anyone linking to Google or YouTube as they reference or indirectly link to piracy:

Removed Community CrackWatch@lemmy.dbzer0.com
reason: facilitating piracy, referencing websites used for the distribution of copyright infringing material in images

Removed Community Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com
reason: facilitating piracy, indirectly linking to websites used for the distribution of copyright infringing material

From the initial removal announcement post:

The discussions that have happened in various threads on Lemmy make it very clear that removing the communites before we announced our intent to remove them is not the level of transparency the community expects, and that as stewards of this community we need to be extremely transparent before we do this again in the future as well as make sure that we get feedback around what the planned changes are, because lemmy.world is yours as much as it is ours.

EDITED multiple times due to confusion over origins of the ban.

I am not on a VPN. The error appears from Android Firefox (with adblock disabled) when I browse and select an image to the Fountain Pens community (have not tried others). Any help much appreciated.

User export broken? (lemmy.world)
submitted 4 months ago by aeharding@lemmy.world to c/support@lemmy.world

Is user export broken for anyone else? It exports malformed JSON ending at 121 bytes.

I've tested multiple accounts + browsers. Only happens on lemmy.world.

For anyone unaware, a community's outbox typically contains the last 50 or so Post Announcements - it is retrieved when you are the first person to find a community on a remote instance. It also seems to be fetched whenever an community on a remote instance realizes it's out of sync with the community on its host instance.

Compare:

curl --header 'accept: application/json' https://lemmy.world/c/memes | jq -r .outbox
=> https://lemmy.world/c/memes/outbox
curl --header 'accept: application/json' https://lemmy.world/c/memes/outbox | jq .
{
  "error": "unknown",
  "message": "Record not found"
}

with

curl --header 'accept: application/json' https://lemmy.world/c/linuxmemes | jq -r .outbox
=> https://lemmy.world/c/linuxmemes/outbox
curl --header 'accept: application/json' https://lemmy.world/c/linuxmemes/outbox | jq .orderedItems[0]
{
    "id": "https://lemmy.world/activities/announce/create/0223f939-aafc-4215-9c20-a3460c967f63"
    ... (the rest of the most recent post from linux memes)
}

(I came across this randomly, so I don't know if 'memes' is the only community missing an outbox. Others I've tried have been OK though)

All the communities on lemmy.lukeog.com are mirrors of Reddit boards. lemmy.lukeog.com does not accept posts from Lemmy users -- only its bot may post and comment, and its posts and comments are just mirrors of Reddit posts and comments.

This doesn't seem like a useful way to use Lemmy. It's more like just a mirror of Reddit, in which case archive.is or web.archive.org would be more useful, in my opinion.

Better not to waste bandwidth and resources on this, in my opinion.

Basically the title. I use MullVad, and recently discovered that Lemmy.world is not allowing me to submit new posts or commenting on others' posts if I have my VPN on.

For now I have excluded my Lemmy client of choice (Voyager) from my VPN, so things are back to normal.

As a reason behind this, I read elsewhere that this blocking of VPN is intentional as certain people posted CSAM while behind VPN. This is pretty despicable, so I totally support shutting those people out.

However, on that same note, I think it is fair to assume that every post and comment on Lemmy is stored along with the IP address of the User. Is that right?

Edit : Some readers are confirming that they can write posts and comments in Lemmy.world while on a VPN - and I wholeheartedly thank them. I only posted what I personally (and some other lemmings as well) experienced. I still do not know if this is a widespread problem or only happening to a few.
