Why do new posts auto-load on the 'front page'? (lemmy.ca)

If this place gets super busy, the front page will be unusable. Is there a way to turn this off?

The mentioned version 0.18 also just got its first release candidate for testing. I can only imagine it'll be rolling out fully in the coming days.
