I actually have a couple of virtual pets. I have a Tamagotchi rerelease and a Ver.20 Pendulum that I got on release date when they were a only like $50, apparently they go for well over $200 now because I got the Gallantmon (Dukemon for you weebs) themed one.
Look, landlords can't ban me if my pets are digital.
I am very tempted to get one of these Monster Hunter ones, hopefully I can get them for the retail price before they sell out because I'm sure as hell not paying scalper prices for toys.
basically that bandai's predatory marketing vs prohibitively high secondary market prices re : digimon vpets specifically had me feeling like i'd never spend money on treats again
