Of course he gave a Roman salute, followed by a Bellamy salute to the flag.
Of course, it's called a Roman salute because fascists, especially Italian fascists wanted to associate themselves with the Roman empire as an image of strength.

Well fuck, it's almost like the Roman salute and Bellamy salute used after the mid-20th century are just a way to pretend what you're doing isn't actually a fascist salute or something. Like it's, I don't know, a particularly poor attempt at plausible deniability.
