It was probably among the less likely ways to die, they didn't even get to that layer of death possibilities, I mean why worry about it when long before that you have knives, swords, arrows, cannons, blunt force objects, explosive gunpowder...honestly maybe among the least grisly? And I say that hating the idea of drowning.

Consider that any of those other things that doesn't immediately kill you has a chance of knocking you overboard, unless you're in the middle of the deck. Doesn't even have to injure you.
