Conservatives be like:
[Shoveling Jews into the furnace] "What's your problem, lib, it's the law! You don't think we should follow the law?!"
Also like what even is "basic law" like laws are laws. People make them up. Saying "basic" seems to be implying that its somehow more legitimate then "other" laws. Or that its common sense. Which it certainly is not.
Edit: Also "Common Law" is an actual term for things like marriage and in that case if 2 people are living as if they are married but not legally married courts will consider them married for legal purposes under common law. If someone is living in the US, working, having a family, etc why shouldn't we say they are common law citizens?
I get your point but only like 8 states recognize common law marriage so maybe not the best example
