The West is a desert of socialist understanding. People grasp onto whatever seems kind of left and say, "hey look at this that seems pretty good he's my guy now" and they won't leave it behind for years and years until either actually reading theory or learning something too upsetting about the person.
If you ask a self-described American leftist to name 5 living socialist public figures they admire or appreciate they would usually struggle at the task.
