It's not like either word is new but I feel like "bro" and variations like bruh or brah have become way more commonly used in the last decade among younger people as a term of address in contexts where I would have just said dude

Iโ€™m from the UK. Weโ€™ve said it for as long as I can remember, but mate is way more common.

I have fond memories of my elementary school teacher in the 80's (northeast US) getting absolutely enraged anytime someone in our class said Dude. And she would respond with "frothingfash A DUDE IS THE FIRST HAIR ON AN ELEPHANT'S ASS!" and we loved it. hahaha
