Had a middle-aged coworker that I carpooled with occasionally when I was younger. Totally chill for the most part, we left early in the morning and generally just listened to the radio quietly.

He offered to get me coffee while we were on the road one day. Pulled into a bikini barista drive-thru. The gal working asked if I was his daughter.

I didn’t carpool with him after that lol

What the fuck is a bikini barista????

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 30 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (8 children)

They used to be common around here in the Seattle area. Most of them were brothels with an occasional real girl in a bikini serving you out of a coffee shack in a parking lot. Is this not common?

They're still very common over on the east side of the state, but they lose the pretense of "bikini" and go straight to "lingerie." I think twice a week they even exchange a standard lingerie top for pasties.

Wow, the west coast is wild. I've never seen anything remotely like that

Portland, Oregon has more strip clubs per capita than any city is the US. It is currently around 1 for every 11,800 residents. https://priceonomics.com/why-does-portland-have-so-many-strip-clubs/

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago

I thought Tampa (or Clearwater?) was the “stripper capital” of the US.

Its a really weird variant of a strip bar. It kind of makes the prostitution angle of stripping more difficult because of the logistics of the cars and the coffee huts. No dark corners like strip bars as they are just tiny drive thru buildings. In sure shit still happens, but less than usual. Likely safer for the sex workers too.

The window is always turned away from the road, likely by law.

Oddly, its almost a puritanical strip club where people pay $20 for a coffee and 5 minutes of attention from a stripper. It's like if hooters was more blatantly a strip club, but wouldn't commit to it.

I think the pretense of bikini was left by the wayside almost immediately when these types of coffee stands came around haha

[–] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

As open as i am with sexuality and how this sounds awesome on paper, I don't even think I could bring myself to stopping by one of these just out of anxiety. It's just not the mindset i want to be in when getting something as simple as a coffee lol.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago

I didn’t know they were fronts for brothels.

I remember they were trying to open some in the SF East Bay, and some people were objecting. I was thinking if they want to serve coffee in a bikini, what’s the big deal.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Used to be? They're still all over my dude.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago

Like a handjob from starbucks?

[–] CaptainPedantic@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

They're still pretty common in the Seattle metro area. My parents are within a stone's throw of two of them.

That first link had Ad Herpes, and it was flaring up hard.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 days ago

ublock origin, my dude

If you're an adult without herpes then you haven't lived

I've never seen anything even remotely like it aside from maybe hooters if you count that. I'm not necessarily against it but it definitely seems like a weird aspect to add to your 6 AM coffee order.

[–] velma@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 days ago

I thought they were more common than they are apparently!

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

They're enough of a thing to have a robust wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bikini_barista

[–] radiofreebc@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Joe: Man, I could really go for a Starbucks, you know?

Frito: Yeah, well, I really don't think we have time for a hand job, Joe.

[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Literally what it sounds like. Coffee shops where the baristas wear bikinis or lingerie. Like Hooters but usually skimpier.

[–] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I assumed but figured no way thats a thing. Damn thats nuts.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

But did you lose your glasses?

[–] velma@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 days ago

Never around that particular coworker lol
