You realize that it is possible to own apartments, right? Most people who live in apartments in China own them, they don't rent.
The same goes for many other countries, this is not unique to China.
And not everyone is as anti-social as you that they need to live in isolation miles away from their neighbors.
Of course if that's what you prefer, you can also live that way in China. Most Chinese people prefer not to live that way because they live in a society where people actually like being sociable and interacting with other people. Even when they live rurally they still live close to each other, because they actually like each other and get along and appreciate the value of community.
I know, foreign concept if you live in a society that is completely alienated where you hate, resent, fear and mistrust your fellow citizens.
