British canals are 2 to 4 ft deep and don't have currents. Did they not know how to simply stand up? (lemmy.ca)

Leeds-Liverpool canal is 4 ft deep in the middle.

You can drown in a bathtub. Depends on the situation.

That there were two and one had some medical issues, that suggests in my mind the lifeguard danger, where someone panicking can also drown their rescuer.

Or sure, it's a conspiracy of Big Canal. What does the evidence suggest?
