Dave explains the magic of fopen and the multiple ways it can be used that many programmers do not even know about.

Ugh these ai thumbnails just make it look so cheap and clickbait

This is a newer thing for him. Hopefully an experiment that he will let fail. Dave's content is ... fine. Not really for me. He generally knows what he's talking about. But yeah the "AI" look is just offputting. Actually detracting from anything of substance.

I like his content a lot which makes this sad to me

I have no problems with that particular thumbnail

understood. I can upload something generic in place of, but that kinda modifies the author's presentation. :-(

other than that, I don't have a good solution to the ai graphic slop - even for mildly interesting pass-time content.

edit: interestingly, jerboa never shows youtube thumbnails and my workflow through newpipe doesn't either - so I have zero idea what these thumbnails look like.

There is an extension called DeArrow, that replaces video titles from the community. It can also replace thumbnails. Another method is a setting in FreeTube app to set Thumbail Preference to automatically replace with in video screenshot. Maybe those applications does one of those things.
