I do think having options like letting people disable dms, letting people choose to need to approve dms to get notifications about them and then having a whitelist makes sense. I can make tickets for those in the lemmy repo later if they don't exist already

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 8 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

yeah pretty much exactly that. It's custom built 100% by our team with no external tools or anything (just a way to notify us using apis). it's technically a separate running code since we can't hook it into the base lemmy code that easily but acts the same way

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Fair enough. Could you edit your crossposts to the new version of the post that has some clarifications just so there's no misscommunication about this anywhere (you could put the original under a lemmy spoiler block which turns it into a dropdown for people that want to see original wording, details on how to do that here https://join-lemmy.org/docs/users/02-media.html. Or some other way you want)

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 18 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

Theres no LLM involved. This version of the post doesnt have the tldr to clarify some things so ill just repost my comment here

  • Were not sending data to an LLM but the method is hidden so bad actors cant bypass it (you can disagree on that but the main issue is bots that are able to check blacklisted content and then just edit messages slightly to bypass it)
  • The things that are checked are public (posts, comments, and dms that are also sent to other servers we dont control) and can be moderated on regardless of this. There isnt anything that breaches privacy
  • Worst thing it can automatically do is temporarily remove a post/comment until an admin can approve or deny it just so its not there for people to run into (for example if someone spams slurs at someone else the someone else doesnt see that instead of it being there until an admin is able to come online)
[–] Ategon@programming.dev 24 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (3 children)

For context this is for programming.dev specifially and affects our users rather than something on any fediverse software (figured I would mention that since it was cross posted into the main fediverse com with no context)

Reposting my answer to a comment on the main p.d post just so theres no confusion on this

  • Processing is local. Were not sending data to an LLM but the method is hidden so bad actors cant bypass it
  • The things that are checked are public (posts, comments, and dms that are also sent to other servers we dont control) and can be moderated on regardless of this.
[–] Ategon@programming.dev 6 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

for a couple of those

The things that are checked are public (posts, comments, and dms that are also sent to other servers we dont control) and can be moderated on regardless of this. There isnt anything that breaches privacy

The way its being moderated isnt disclosed so that people cant just bypass it. The processing is local though like said in the original message (so for example were not sending this to some LLM/Ai to then use)

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Everything is sent for human review so false positives can be reversed quickly and the worst action that happens is removal of content temporarily (before thats reversed)

This just means someone cant spin up a new account and spam things on the site or on federated sites and have that linger until its able to be moderated

I was curious on how the results looked with a standard eurovision style point distribution (where each instance gives points) instead of just average rank when looking at all the votes and figured others would be as well.

Due to certain groups having a lot more votes cast than others it tends to change the results a bit so that each group is evenly represented (instead of ones with more people having more votes to affect the average rankings. e.g. Germany has over a quarter of all of the votes cast)

In first we get Merz Leck Eier with a total of 84 points! It received 12 points from 3 different groups (Anime & Vocaloid, Programming.Dev, and UK)

Rounding out the top 3 is Limbo with 74 points and Fabienk with 66 points.

Hey everyone, sorry for the bit of issues with the outbound federation.

We recently updated the site to 0.19.18 and that ended up breaking the outbound federation for a bit. Luckily no activity silently failed so all posts/comments/etc. were able to be retroactively sent to other instances so that everything made during the downtime is still federated as normal now.

A couple larger instances might still be behind on content for a bit as they catch up on activities but if this post can be seen in another instance that means that instance is fully caught up. (should only be lemmy.world and a couple others that are behind)

Can you link to the post thats having issues

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 3 points 10 months ago

startrek.website

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 4 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I remember them being allowed but I might be thinking of 2023 I guess

edit: yeah was 2023

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 11 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (4 children)

Important notes for the stats

  • ~~2024 had alts allowed which inflated the account numbers while 2025 doesnt allow them~~ edit: nevermind was a 2023 thing
  • the time interval 2024 was in was double the size of 2025 (but site was down a bit within that but still has more than 3 days of uptime vs 2025s 2 days)

Canvas ends in 22 hours! (programming.dev)
submitted 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) by Ategon@programming.dev to c/events@programming.dev

Its the last day of the !canvas@toast.ooo event with it ending 22 hours from when this post is made.

This is an event similar to to r/place where everyone can place a pixel on a canvas every so often. Everyone has access to the same canvas meaning you can work together to construct art and wars can happen for territory leading to needing to defend things that get constructed

Theres still some work that needs to be done for the programming.dev design so any help getting that up is appreciated. There's also still blank space around the canvas if anyone wants to add in their own designs.

Event link: https://canvas.fediverse.events/

The programming.dev design template: https://canvas.fediverse.events/#x=380&y=297&zoom=1&tu=https%3A%2F%2Fbytes.programming.dev%2Ffiles%2Ff2c5ff7d-e015-40be-851d-81ecf3c9e77c&tw=66&tx=403&ty=393&ts=DOTTED_SMALL (were near the bottom right)

Theres a timelapse of the event up to the current point at https://sc07.tv/w/sV6dtF1u1e3wMDB24k2fqZ

Happy pixel placing!

Canvas is happening in almost a day! This is an event similar to to r/place where everyone can place a pixel on a canvas every so often. Everyone has access to the same canvas meaning you can work together to construct art and wars can happen for territory leading to needing to defend things that get constructed

The event link is here: https://canvas.fediverse.events/

This is the third time the event is taking place. Theres an image in the post of what the p.d area looked like the second time it happened (were using a similar ish template this year with some differences so its different than last year)

The main locations for dicussing the event for programming.dev is this community, our discord and our matrix if you want to chat with other people participating

Theres a design that will be getting made for programming.dev in general but if any communities want to organize something feel free to plan out something nearby or elsewhere on the canvas. Any help getting the programming.dev design built will also be really appreciated since then we will be able to expand out the design and get more communities represented in the community icons

You can use this template to know where to place pixels for the programming.dev design when the event is happening

One to one: https://canvas.fediverse.events/#x=380&y=297&zoom=1&tu=https%3A%2F%2Fbytes.programming.dev%2Ffiles%2Ff2c5ff7d-e015-40be-851d-81ecf3c9e77c&tw=66&tx=403&ty=393&ts=ONE_TO_ONE

Combined all the templates I could find into one giant template for ease of seeing where theres free space

Feel free to reply with other templates for me to add them on or with updates to templates

Theres currently 3 space conflicts (with smaller art going on the same spot as larger art)

  • edit: added toast.ooo
  • edit 2: updated programming.dev template
  • edit 3: added feddit, bt free, fireside fedi, synthwave
  • edit 4: updated synthwave position
  • edit 5: added 3 new designs. Im not doing any more edits to this as its close to the event now

Remember to Report Issues (programming.dev)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by Ategon@programming.dev to c/meta@programming.dev

If you ever run into issues with the instance make sure to report them to someone on the admin team so we can fix them (Ive seen some people mention some stuff I didnt know about before since it wasnt brought up). Duplicate reports about the same issue is better than no report at all so dont worry about reporting something someone else already might

Most of the team can be reached quickly through the discord and matrix channels (more of the team is on discord but theyre federated to each other)

As well since I already got this question due to the lemm.ee shutdown just wanted to also mention here we did onboard someone new to the admin team since when we asked in the post and the instance is doing fine

I fixed a slowness issue so you might see the instance get quicker but if it still bad let me know. Ive been clearing out some tasks in my backlog for other projects im doing and am planning to start doing development work on some things relevant to the instance again sometime in the summer. For things related to the community side of the instance prioritize reaching out to someone on the community team (list is on the legal site) as always since they are the team that deals with those aspects)

Hi everyone! Were currently looking to get two new members of the community team: one for programming.dev (our forum and link aggregator) and one for bytes.programming.dev (our microblog)

Tasks would include making sure the community side of the instance runs smoothly so that people can enjoy the content on it

For programming.dev that would include helping with handling reports that come in, handling applications and making sure content hosted on the instance follows the CoC. For bytes it would be the same bar applications as bytes does not have an application process. You can see the full administration guidelines on our legal site here: https://legal.programming.dev/docs/administration-guidelines/. The primary communication platform for the admins is discord but all channels are also bridged to matrix

Anyone interested feel free to reach out to one of the team members listed in the administration guidelines (apart from snowe) or comment on the mirror of this post created on the programming.dev side (you can reach out on discord, matrix, programming.dev, or bytes)

The process for getting added onto the team would include an interview and permissions being added slowly to make sure new additions understand the guidelines and how they should be handling reports

Been working on getting a game jam set up with a bunch of other organizers for the past bit. At some point in the future I should be adding in activitypub support (for the microblog side of the fediverse) so that posts mentioning the jam show up in the jam main page (that wont be for this iteration of the jam though since I primarily focused on getting the base jam functionality up)

D2Jam is a community centered game jam with a emphasis on supporting things constructed by the community! We wanted a jam which celebrated post-submission events, encouraged discourse and reflection, and provided tools for developers to find and share games.

D2Jam is an online game jam that anyone is free to join and that lasts for 3 days (Somewhere between Friday and Monday depending on timezones). There is a 2 hour submission window at the end as a time to make sure you get your game submitted before the jam fully ends. After the jam there is a 2 week rating period to play, rate, and give feedback to other entries in the jam. In addition any post jam events such as the Score Chasers tournament will be run in the post jam period.

We have 2 categories: Regular and O.D.A (One Dev Army). Both happen at the same time.
