V8 is a lot less bad than the soda that a plurality of Americans drink exclusively.
If his electrolytes get really low, 2 tbsp of molasses and 1 tsp of salt in 1 quart of water (cross-check the ratio) is a really good way to replenish them, you can add syrup concentrate or even water flavor mixes to make them fruity. When my mom had an illness that caused a lot of vomiting I prepared something like this. I made something for a neighbor who was more treat-dependent by adding some lemon and orange juice and some baking soda, to make it fizzy amd vaguely Mountain Dew-flavored.
