Strawberries at a thousand rubles reminds me of this American psychologist who was embedded with the Allied force that captured Aachen as the first major city of Germany in late 1944.

When he interviewed the local Germans they reported that the past few years had been tough on them. Nobody had had any real coffee since forever, and no butter, either.

War really is hell, I guess.
