They could still win if China moved in to help more and took an active role. It's not a given.

China doesn’t want them to win, they just want them not to lose.

China is perfectly happy to sit back and supply whatever they can get away with. Drones, fuel, whatever. They profit while their competitors crumble.

Not only that, but longer term they want Russia's natural resources, and its land. They're fine with a permanently weakened Russia that can be turned into a vassal state, they have every reason to half-help with this unforced error of a war until they're completely spent.

They really couldn't, China is involved as much as it is going to be for now, besides it isn't as if China has proven it knows how to fight any better than russia.

What will happen is China will take an active role by buying up most of russia in a liquidation/fire sale situation as russia crumbles.

The only thing Putin can do to retain power is make deals with China to betray russians and sell of assets quietly to Chinese control in exchange for China shoring up Putin's strength against domestic political threats.

This process may already be quite far advanced, I don't know, but is inevitable as Putin faceplants more and more.
