Basic sewing is such an important skill! Everyone should at least know how to sew a hem and replace a button.
I am saddened by the steep decrease in sewing machine quality. I wish I had kept my mother's and grandmother's Singers after they passed. Built to last multiple lifetimes without snapping a thread or missing a stitch.
Keep an eye out for used machines. There's plenty out there.
Same here, my mother had one of those Singer machines that folded down into a desk when it was not in use. Beautiful piece of equipment!
