I’m having trouble understanding ESPN’s business model at this point. It feels like they go through once per year and get rid of the top 25% of their on air talent.
Either they think that Schefter can provide ALL of the breaking news and Stephen A Smith can do all of the analysis, or they think that people will tune in for other things besides on air talent.
I haven’t watched espn consistently for years, but this isnt a path that’s going to bring me back.
Why on earth would you go back?
What ESPN is wrestling with is what to do outside of showing games. Does anyone bother with Sports Center Styles shows anymore? Sports information now deliverd bu youtube shorts, tik tok shorts and X (twitter) microblog delivery now.
I mean, Im old as dirt but I remember having sports center on repeat for the morning. The randomness works. Whereas all this stupid commentary on bullshit doesn't matter in the least and is easily avoided.
But I admit I'm not your average person here.
Oh yeah starting around 2000 ESPN was pretty much always on in my house. That stopped somewhere in the augts. ESPN was also where I saw the replays etc, but that is not the case anymore. Why wait for Around the Horn when I can just find out instantly whenever I want.
I think for me it was that it curated things I wouldn't be seeking out anyway. Had all the games, all the highlights, top ten, etc. etc. Much the same way Tosh.0 worked simply because they curated the videos and intersparsed some commentary with them (which, I think failed mainly when Tosh was doing the longwinded end ones IMO.)
But I never got into any of the talking head shows. It was usually about something inane or boring and nowadays it seems they rely on essentially shock jocks and that just isn't my bag at all. But...it's worth far more now than it was so I guess they know their audience better than me.
