Giga is the Spanish word, so they might just use it because it's more bilingual friendly
I doubt it has anything to do with Spanish. The G in Gbps stands for giga because that's the SI prefix for 10 to the power of 9 or 1000 bigger than mega. Calling it a gig is just a lazy wording.
I call it gig, it's a pretty common abbreviation IMO, like 32 gigs of ram.
