Thoughts on reviving an old iPod (hexbear.net)

I found my old iPod a while ago, I tried turning it on and it kept boot looping so I thought it was a goner. However I took a chance and got a new battery for it, (only $18 surprisingly) and after more effort than I would have liked, I got it working. It was very strange, it turned on just like nothing happened, completely oblivious to the passage of time. I remember years ago when I put it in storage I thought, why am I carrying my phone and an iPod around when my phone can play music just fine. Somthing changed, maybe it’s the effect of enshittification, but my experience with my old iPod is much nicer than pretty much any recent music program. I’ve been using Rhythmbox to sync my iPod with my music library. It also has a very nice interface for managing podcasts via adding an RSS feed. If anyone knows of cool things to do with an iPod I would be interested.

There's a movement towards dedicated devices and offline listening. If you look up the Innioasis Y1 it's just an iPod clone.

If you have the real thing still you'll be considered extra cool

Unfortunately, a lot of the current wave of dedicated audio player devices are wildly overpriced audiofool snake oil.
