Depending on the model, you can replace the drive with flash memory and use the extra internal space for a battery upgrade.

And yes, rockbox for sure. Adds a lot of functionality but does break compatability with some accessories if that matters to you, but I think it dual boots by default.

One of my siblings had an old ipad and they loaded a bunch of family photos on it. Then they set it up so the screen saver would cycle through the photos and propped it up on a coffee table like a digital picture frame.

I recently rebuilt my partner's iPod, it was a lot of fun and a pretty cool birthday gift!!

I was doing some worldbuilding for a setting/story idea and I landed on the thought that, in a truly post-scarcity society, people would abandon phones/tablets for clicky/tactile specialized devices purely because they're more fun to use. I don't have an ipod at the moment but it's definitely something I want to try - relegate my phone to just work where I need it and move the rest of my electronic use back to specialized devices.

I remember having a lot of fun playing around with iPod Linux back in the day, but apparently Rockbox is the thing nowadays.
