It's because making the world better requires change and conservatives are terrified of everything, especially change.

Go up to a conservative. Any conservative. And ask them to talk about politics. No other prompt. Just talk about politics. Don't interrupt them for maybe 5 minutes. They'll spend at least 95% of their time talking about fear, in some form or another. Conservatism is built upon, and maintained, by fear.

But its always the dumbest fear.

Its not like "im worried about some idiot POTUS destroying my livelihood through his own ego and a misunderstanding of economic policy" or "im not going to be able to afford health care when i inevitably get sick".

Its always "if you let gay people get married then people will marry their pets and that would be an atrocity because reasons".
