The following communities among the top 20 are only moderated by admins and/or inactive accounts, so if anyone (who's been an active user for a while -- e.g. at least a year old, with a reasonable post/comment history -- and is available most days) is interested in becoming a mod for any of these communities, you can comment here or DM me. Please include a brief explanation for why you'd like to moderate it.
A mod's main responsibility is to be active in that community to identify posts and comments that break instance/community rules, and to remove them and assign bans accordingly. If you find something that merits an instance-wide ban, you can report it yourself (if it's already been reported, just leave it until we notice it). Do not use the "remove comments" feature when banning someone. This will remove every comment without a trace in the modlog and should only be used by admins for spammers or particularly egregious content.
If there's another community (without active non-admin mods) you'd like to moderate, you can apply here as well.
I could do China or perhaps Europe or World News, if there's no one else. But honestly in all the time i've been here I've seen very little need for mods to step in. We hardly ever get outright hostile trolls, especially in those comms. And i would probably be too permissive as a mod because i quite enjoy having discussions with people of different views. Since i joined i reported only maybe a handful of comments, and that was for just straight up fascism.
This post should help explain why we're looking for mods. The idea is that if we have people who are active in a particular community moderate that community, they can deal with the occasional breaking of the "be respectful" rule in particular without having to wait for an admin to deal with a report. This includes intervening without removing comments or assigning bans; a mod should be able to use the "speak as moderator" feature to reply to comments that seem likely to generate conflict.
That all sounds very reasonable. As i said, i can do the China one if there is still a need.
Great, I've added you to /c/china.
If nobody volunteers for Europe in the next couple of weeks i can do that one too, i'm quite active there as well. In general i'd prefer just focusing on one, it's just if nobody steps up and you absolutely need someone to do it.
We'll probably be able to find someone, but I'll let you know if we don't
