An MKV could include a host of different audio stream codecs. You'd have to first find out which one(s) your files are using, with a tool like
mediainfo, for example.Some media players like mpv or mplayer variants usually come bundled with a bunch of typical codecs.
Could it be that it's a "proprietary" one like DTS or AC3 (alias Dolby Digital) which for that reason your distro does not ship out of the box?
